Final numbers also in for the original Pfizer vaccine, it also came in at 95% efficacy (pretty much same as the Moderna). So at this point it seems vaccines that target the spike protein (which all the current varients under testing do) should be about the same very high efficacy rate.

This is excellent news, means all the expertise and knowledge has paid off. The first crack at the vaccine is highly effective, and it will not matter which variant one receives at the end. Some of this amazing success has to do with our ability to sequence the virus and ability to do genetic sequencing.

This, to me, is yet another example of how expertise and knowledge is much more important than beliefs. Our fields of knowledge and our ability to analyze and learn are such an accomplishment of humanity. Instinct, misinformation and beliefs really are not the way to tackle complex issues. We should always follow science and listen to the REAL experts in a field to find the best way forward.

So once the vaccine is available in wide supplies we will quickly bring this virus under control. We just have to be hyper vigilant to minimize the damage that is coming from this third and in some areas uncontrolled wave of Covid.

Added: it also has shown no safety concerns and they are applying for emergency use authorization within days.

#2: November 18, 2020, 06:33:19 AM
I heard last night that to maximize the potential to control COVID, will require at least 75% of the population receiving the vaccine.

We need to keep this in mind as we talk about the vaccine to others.  I am concerned that people will see this as an impingement on their "freedom".

They were comparing the efficacy of the COVID vaccine to measles vaccine and that has been shown to prevent measles in a population that has a high rate of vaccination. Unfortunately we start to see measles outbreaks in communities who have a  higher number people who refuse to vaccine their children.

My daughter and I are joyfully planning our ability to see one another, some day when we are both vaccinated and it is safe to travel.

In the meantime, everything we do, every step we take right now will make the difference in the number of cases and deaths. As hard as it is to follow the public health orders in your community, each of us can make a difference. Thanks to all of you who are holding fast to social distancing, mask wearing, hand washing and avoiding being together with family and friends, especially hard as we come up to this holiday season.

Great news from Zoom that will offer unlimited time to be on line with family for Thanksgiving

Another good sign, a study shows immunity may last quite a long while.

PEOPLE INFECTED WITH the coronavirus could remain immune for years after their recovery, a new study suggests, offering news that could quell worries about waning immunity as potential vaccines are nearing availability.

Scientists at the La Jolla Institute of Immunology in California found that eight months after participants had been infected with COVID-19, they still had high enough immune cells to fight off the virus and prevent another round of infection. That slow rate of decline in the short term indicates that immunity may remain for years.

Not to put a stick in it, but, and, I’m not sure how to even ask this except in sort of an MLC-themed way, and apologies for the preamble,

I’m wading in medication fact sheets on behalf of a dear friend whose cancer treatments are either about to change or by her decision completely end. Have Pfizer or Moderna released the fact sheets for these vaccines? I can’t find them. Those are important, for anyone’s decision whether to be vaccinated.

Because of MLC/LBS life, I have eyed C19 from the start as potentially some kind of airborne version of HSV1, HSV2, HPV, or HIV. That may be simplistic or full-tilt just wrong, but it’s one reason I have no problem sheltering at home, isolating, or wearing mask.

The HX viruses are super common, super contagious, and they stick around. Two can’t be cured; two can kill you. One can’t be tested for in men. Any one of them may cause symptoms that don’t appear to have any explanation and aren’t obviously symptoms of an STD at all.

The ones that can’t be cured, shed and transmit even when the carrier is asymptomatic. Which, frequently enough, carriers are.

Are any of these things true of C19?

Do we know, yet?

The cancer treatment medication fact sheets, one of the proposed combos has only been approved this year and after 3 years of clinical study and trials. How long have either of the proposed vaccines even been studied, if C19 just turned up last year?

Not saying the vaccines are not good news. Just, in my house we are probably going to wait a while before saying yes to them. Still, glad that they are coming along, and thank you for continuing this important thread topic.

Ahh, that article hits the spot.

Quote
“We were more prepared for a coronavirus than for any other family,” NIH’s Graham said. “To me, this is a wake-up call that we need to have a more systematic universal approach to developing vaccines and other countermeasures for virus families ahead of time.”

I love this, and the Lego piece comparison as well. Thank you so much for a great link, Acorn.

For what it’s worth, in the FDA regulated environments, we were striving toward universal approach and global standardization in the few years prior to the current and exiting White House administration. We knew in late 2016 that the sciences were targeted, and as soon as January 2017, we saw clearly that things were about to fall apart, fast. That started almost immediately and it never stopped.

God willing, now the systems get back on track and the universal approach and global standards can be achieved.

Here is a non technical article. The brief version is that the immune system has a few different kinds of cells/systems, including memory ones. This is considering all the different components. Essentially the immune system can also quickly rebuild a lot of immunity from the memory cells. This is the basic mechanism behind vaccinations.

Ok one more confirmation that immunity will last at least six months (that is how long the follow up was, will know more as time goes on). Can't find original yet, but here is the report from The Guardian.

A British study that found people who have had Covid-19 are unlikely to contract the disease again for at least six months is good news and also provides hope for vaccines, a World Health Organization senior official said.

“This is really good news to see that we are seeing sustained levels of immune response in humans so far,” Mike Ryan, WHO’s top emergency expert, told a news conference.

It also gives us hope on the vaccine side.”

Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, added:

We still need to follow these individuals for a longer period of time to see how long immunity lasts.”

That article and its implications just give me anxiety. I really wish people would stop minimizing this virus.

I’m also sort of anticipating an eventual backlash similar to what happens to people who experience long-term effects from say Lyme disease, where the medical community can’t put a definitive name to it and laypeople accuse the sufferers of either faking or milking the effects of their illness.
I hate to say it. I wish I had more faith in people.

The vaccines are coming, but remember the science and facts carry more weight than the marketing and press releases.

It’s going to take some time. Look beyond this winter we are all in, more probably to March or April or even next August. In the meantime, please stay home and when out for essential business, wear your mask.

It’s imperative to do what is morally right for the greatest good. I feel like that’s probably preaching to the choir, here on HS, but it’s worth saying aloud anyway. Stay well. Make sure your daily actions give everyone around you a greater chance of staying well, too.

I received a phone call about an hour ago (at 9 pm).
I’m packing my bags tomorrow and heading back to New England!
Why does this news belong on this thread?

I’ve just accepted a job offer as a technical specialist for Moderna.
Btw... I’m a equipment, technique, bio-process engineer specialist, the actual science of the vaccine is not my expertise.

I just felt the need to announce this news on this site bc I wouldn’t be doing something this big if he never left. I guess everything does happen for a reason.  :)

Hi everyone, just to remind you all to keep safe - I have just tested positive for Covid-19.

I have always taken a scientific approach to this virus and I have socially distanced, sanitized grocery purchases, worn masks, washed my hands, yet, it caught up with me and I really have no idea how. ???

Fortunately, I am healthy and I have access to good medical advice - I am on my 8th or 9th day of infection according to the doctor, I have lightish symptoms and have no need to take any medicine at the present time. I am to rest,  keep hydrated and monitor my oxygen saturation levels with an oximeter 4 to 6 times a day aiming at higher than 94%. According to the doctor I should be over this in four or five days.

Stay safe, everyone! and bring on the vaccines!!!

Interesting tool to give you a vague idea of where you fall in the line to get the vaccine:

Not sure why that means we could have moved any faster. To qualify and make sure a vaccine is safe in 10 months is AMAZING. I can’t even imagine what would have happened if we had taken shortcuts and something had gone wrong.

On the other hand this is criminal incompetence. Pfizer offered to sell more doses to US government before committing supplies overseas and the Trump administration refused. Now Pfizer can not supply more to the US after first 100 million doses until July of next year. Meanwhile EU has secured 200 million doses with option for another 100 doses. I mean when a company tries to make sure the supplies go the the host country first and the “America First” administration refuses what do you call that?

I agree regarding the roll out of the vaccine. As it is, people do not trust it as they say it’s too fast.

I was referring more to the other issues regarding the handling of the pandemic that the article addresses.

Why the Trump administration refused to buy more doses is typical of how badly things were handled. I think the Canadian government has  several different contracts with different manufacturers for the vaccine for their population, since they are not capable of producing the vaccine in Canada.

What concerns me as well is this interim period when there seems to be an attempt of the present government to make it as difficult as possible for planning of the distribution of the vaccine. It sickens me that more deaths will occur because of “politics”.

Medicago is one Canadian company that is working to develop a vaccine, and completed Phase 1 of trials.   The Canadian government has entered a contract to purchase vaccinations once approved by Health Canada

There are also other Canadian companies currently working on a vaccine, I just dont think they got a deal from the government to supply Canadians with them, yet.

Im interested to see how the UK distributes the vaccinations - what is the class priority here, on who gets dosages?  ::)

Most vulnerable elderly first followed by frontline healthcare and care home workers I believe. But some uncertainly over whether they can transport the Pfizer vaccine to care homes if people can't come to the fifty or so vaccine hubs, largely based at hospitals.
First person to have the vaccine today was a 90 year old who just happened to be in hospital for some other tests....

The first woman in the uk to receive the vaccine was 91 yr old Margaret.

She didn't look 91 at all and she was so lively and so bubbly......yet again another wake up call in being grateful (Vaccine or not)

Covid has done much damage but it has also become the biggest human reset button we have all needed for a long time.

Very thought provoking - for this year and for MLC.  And I laughed when I first started reading because just last night I was watching a dating video that one of the dating sites had put out that my friend had sent me that depicts 2020 as a woman dating the devil.

The Covid restrictions hit really hard tonight.  Here, we are not able to invite anyone into our homes, and we cannot gather outside either - with anyone.    Earlier, I met my SD in a Salon parking lot where we had back to back app'ts.  (Last day for personal service businesses to completely shut down too).  I don't know if that is considered a 'gathering' but it was going to be for mere seconds - just enough time to transfer their Xmas gifts from my trunk to hers.   When I pulled up beside them, my one granddaughter really wanted to get out of the car for a hug.  I would have loved that but I had to ask her to stay in the car.   My other granddaughter had a birthday so she was able to open her birthday gift right away which she did while inside the car.   She was so happy with her gift she was sobbing.  Then she was right beside me outside the car, still crying and asking if she could hug me.  :'(    I stood there for a second then I broke the rules and gave her the quickest tightest hug ever in case someone was watching.  (The fine here is $1000 if caught).  My SD was standing 6' away and we didn't hug although we are close.

I had no idea how much a hug meant to me until I was forbidden to give or get one,,,, even when someone is standing right in front of me.   Before Covid, it was inconceivable that I would face a $1000 fine for hugging my own family.   If there is a silver lining that comes with the pandemic then it's this.  Nothing could have drawn my attention to how much I cherish their hugs like this pandemic has.   The memory of tonight will be with me forever.  Thankfully.

Some of us are trying so hard to decrease the transmission, to slow down the number of people in ICU..the medical staff are completely worn out and traumatized by what they are having to do...while many others really couldn't care less. I received a holiday letter today of a friend who will be driving to Texas to be with her son and grandkids, another who went out with a church group today to Applebees..both of which we are being begged not to do..people are so selfish it it unimaginable to me.

You hugged your granddaughter. If that was the only thing that people were doing we wouldn't be in this mess...we are humans, we need physical touch and they are are our grandchildren....and so....I am totally ok with it..much more on than my friend who went to Applebees tonight with several other people.

If the data is correct, children don't seem to transmit the virus as easily as adults.

One day we are all going to be able to hug one another again as much as we want.

Two interrelated stories today. The science/important one is this. There have been studies now showing that Covid is NOT harmless to the younger population and in fact as it spread among them it has caused excess mortality. This is different than the long term consequences, this is death. Yet a lot of young people (and population at large) mistakenly believe its "harmless" unless you are high risk. You can follow the piece to the original paper.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/16/opinion/covid-deaths-young-adults.html

This was after new e-mails came out today that in July the Trump Administration was pushing public health in government towards a "herd immunity" approach arguing that they wanted kids and young adults in the population to mingle and catch Covid, leading to "herd immunity" without vaccination. Obviously this was not the approach of the science and medical communities, this was a political argument.

And BTW we have this woman to thank for mRNA vaccines, which are really quite amazing and leap into the medical future. A lot of times women in science, technology and medicine are not given the credit they deserve.

She was demoted, doubted and rejected. Now, her work is the basis of the Covid-19 vaccine

Hello,

Now that we have the vaccines, I am optimistic for the future. However, right now the area I live in is on fire.  There are no hospital beds and the ICUs are all full. As I was telling a friend, even if they could convert a stadium or empty hotel into a hospital, they don't have anyone to staff it.

Just to be fair, I go to stores now and everyone is wearing a mask. Yet, the numbers are exploding. Hopefully, as we get the vaccine out and people get vaccinated (another hurdle), we can start to overcome this deadly disease. Until then, our only defense is to mask, wash our hands frequently, social distance, and avoid large gatherings. We are having a small Christmas this year and just like Thanksgiving, my parents nor my two daughters will not be at my home. However, I would prefer to skip one celebration and have several more in the future than make this the last celebration for any of my loved ones.

Be safe,

(((((Ready))))

Thanks Ready.

There are still many people that I personally know of who have family members flying from all over the country to be together for Christmas. I women's group I used to belong to had a Christmas pot luck lunch and another group (both church related) are having a Christmas dinner together. Friends who have traveled to Jamaica, Cabos, St Lucia to "vacation". Many other examples from my friend's activities.

These are not "stories" I see on the news...these are real life examples in my own neighborhood.

Why?

We cannot catch COVID nor spread it to others if we don't come in contact with the virus from another person. Everything that we can personally do may mean one less hospital bed full, one less death. One less nurse/doctor/housekeeper overwhelmed with the sick and dying.

These measures, wearing a mask, distancing, washing your hands...are all that we have until each of us is vaccinated, which is still many months away for most of us.

Still, 300,000 deaths, still people are "not going to let the government take away their freedom".

We started this dialogue 9 months ago and still people are arguing that it's no worse than getting the flu.

I really don't understand how people can deny the reality of this.

I really don't understand how people can deny the reality of this.

First there is a cultural narcissism that is rampant. Everyone has become completely self focused, and they really have developed a false sense of being individuals without any context of responsibility to their group.

Second a lot of people have lost understanding of science, respect for knowledge and expertise. It’s frightening.

It’s funny I finally watched Chernobyl and two things struck me

1) how the current US administration functions EXACTLY like the failing Soviet power structure, filled with people with no expertise in their tasks, lying and covering up facts and truth for appearances, and ignoring science.

2) how even there people sacrificed their lives for no other reason than they HAD to, to save many others. They were willing to go to their deaths for the greater good.

Now people think they don’t have to wear a mask because it’s “too inconvenient.”

Most people have no clue what real freedom is.

As the news of a newly identified strain is spreading in UK its a good idea to keep the following in mind (they covered it well in the new conference):

1) It is more efficient as spreading, that is why they have gone to tighter restrictions. The hospitals are getting more patients, despite the previous restrictions they were still seeing increases. Now they know why, so the tightening is a counter to the higher R value.

2) The new variant isn’t any more dangerous nor does it have different or worse symptomolgy or outcomes.

3) The new variant is not different in terms of vaccine efficacy, so it is still covered by the current viruses.

I am sure there will be a lot of misinformation, fear, etc, because of the word “mutation.” Mutation doesn’t mean worse, doesn’t mean stronger. Its only something from movies and bad stories. Keep in mind viruses mutate ALL the time. It is more likely a virus mutates to be weaker then it is stronger.

And finally the mRNA viruses are truly an amazing leap. IF a virus changed enough it would take around one week to modify the vaccine, because we can sequences, identify and change the mRNA to match. This is not possible with traditional vacccines.

This is great - I heard the same today on the main news!

We here in Brazil, are in the same state as you all in the US, possibly worse - We have over 185K dead, officially and as Xyzcf pointed out in her earlier post, what we hear in RL is an increase in cases, hundreds of people waiting for places in a hospital/ICU, including among my coworkers :o

Fortunately, as we work in a med supplies company, we have access to doctors, nurses among our own  and these unfortunate coworkers have received home attention as much as possible and we still have not lost one of ours, although some have lost parents, grandparents...

I have found that in poorer communities, people are more reluctant to wear masks and limit social interaction, of course, these people live in very close quarters and also have to go to work using public transport, so they are very exposed and some believe there is some herd immunity going on. In middle class areas, people are careful and fearful of catching the disease, so mask wearing is widespread. In all closed areas, one has to wear a mask at all times.

In the upper classes, people throw caution to the wind and are very careless of other people, they are negationists and downright rude, they have no consideration for others at all. They continue to travel, hold enormous parties...

I am hopeful for the vaccines, really glad that the Moderna one has been approved!

Just sort of a sobering anecdotal comment here, from one of the very most shut-down counties in the USA,

I went out yesterday on a brief essential errands round, and at every stop, too many people were out and about and clearly not essentially. And also too close for comfort and not wearing masks, exuberant.

We live in an affluent place that usually abides by rules and follows the science. But yesterday there were people of all kinds exhibiting disobedience and throwing caution to the winds. I came home a bit rattled and went in to D for feedback and reality check (after washing my hands, and sanitizing). She confirmed my perception and said her own reality — that good and formerly trusted friends were out visiting with other friends during this time, and that it made her disgusted, stunned, and angry.

Angry. I was so angry yesterday that I just *cried*. We have been good at sheltering at home since the very start. I understand about COVID fatigue but there wasn’t any reason to break quarantine. I don’t understand why my community is doing that — in excess, like, more car and pedestrian traffic and socializing now than even in any pre-pandemic times — and it made me bewildered and hurt. Like, it’s Christmastime. Couldn’t you just *pretend* to have care for your fellow man, during this time of year, during this year especially.

It felt really bad, yesterday. I went to my room just to sit and instead fell asleep at 3pm. Stress sleep, I think. Just 100% unable to keep on, when the world outside this house is behaving without care.

We have friends whose other friends are falling sick with the virus. These once-removed folks are astounded and have no idea how they contracted it; they’ve been sheltering and abiding by guidelines strictly from the very first. No socializing and no non-essential outings, just grocery stores and pumping gas.

Please be careful when you are out. Not to say be scared or contentious around others, but just, please be safe. One of the families that fell sick is feeling better within days of positive test and hard symptoms, but still — please be careful, and stay well.

So not a surprise but more good data about how critical masks are in spreading the spread of the virus. I have seen purposeful misinformation from anti-maskers saying masks don’t protect you from getting it. Again to be clear they are meant to PREVENT spread, not to protect the wearer. So if EVERYONE wore masks it would work brilliantly. Excerpt from Guardian below:
——
Face masks lower the risk of spreading large Covid-linked droplets when speaking or coughing by up to 99.9%, a lab experiment with mechanical mannequins and human subjects has found.

A woman standing 2 metres from a coughing man without a mask will be exposed to 10,000 times more large droplets than if he were wearing one, even if he were then only 50cm away, researchers reported in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

The study focused on particles larger than 170 microns in diameter, which are understood to be the main driver of Sars-CoV-2 transmission.

“There is no more doubt whatsoever that face masks can dramatically reduce the dispersion of potentially virus-laden droplets,” senior author Ignazio Maria Viola, an expert in applied fluid dynamics at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Engineering, told AFP.

According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in Seattle, Washington, 55,000 lives could be saved in the United States over the next four months if a policy of universal mask use were adopted.

The WHO updated its Covid-19 guidance earlier this month to recommend masks be worn indoors in the presence of other people if ventilation is inadequate.

More good news, studies shows having had Covid offers protection from reinfection to six months and maybe more. This probably also carries to vaccination, which means immunity will last for a good while helping halt the pandemic spread with vaccines.

Hello,

Thanks for the positive news.  I agree about the masks and the need for us to not let our guard down because we have friends and family together. I am setting up for our Christmas lunch tomorrow and we will be all outside and I am setting up tables to keep us socially distanced as well.

Since I am not a big New Year's eve person, I am settling for just my wife and I as a couple. And Oh what fun we shall have!!!

I just hope in the meantime, we can get past this surge and let our health community get some well deserved rest.

From The Guardian (sorry no direct link) about more the results from Moderna vaccine, all good news. I know I have zero concerns about getting the vaccine the seconds it is available to me. And. I would encourage the same to everyone:
—-
Further results of clinical trials of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine have been released, with the US firm saying it “exhibited a favourable tolerability and safety profile”.

The phase three trial results showed the vaccine to have 94.1% efficacy at preventing Covid-19 illness, including severe disease, as previously reported.

The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed no serious safety concerns were identified.

The UK government signed a deal for seven million doses of the vaccine, much fewer than numbers for the Oxford/AstraZeneca and Pfizer/BioNTech jabs.

The Moderna deal is enough for around 3.5 million people, who would each receive two doses.

More than 30,000 volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either the vaccine - known as mRNA-1273 - or a placebo.

The journal paper said symptomatic Covid-19 illness was confirmed in 185 participants in the placebo group and 11 in the vaccine group.

Severe Covid-19 happened in 30 participants, with one fatality - all of whom were in the placebo group, the paper said.

Moderna said “solicited systemic adverse events” occurred more often in the vaccine group than the placebo group and were most commonly headache, fatigue and muscle pain.

The firm said the majority of adverse events happened within the first one to two days after injection and generally persisted for around one or two days.

They said safety data will continue to be collected and all participants will be monitored for two years after their second dose to assess long-term protection and safety.

Hello,

Very good news. Now we need to accelerate the number of people being vaccinated. In the US, we should be vaccinating a million people a day by now. The system was poorly developed and left to state and county health departments that were already understaffed and overwhelmed. In CA, even if they had the doses to vaccinate everybody, we lack the staffing because everyone has been pulled to support covid patients.

January can be a very dark month for all of us. Now more than ever is the need to socially distance, wash hands frequently, and wear a mask.

Very good point, another good piece of news is that President Elect Biden plans to release the held back doses of vaccine to the states and has a much more aggressive Federal role in distribution and funding. This means the distribution of vaccine (all the way to the jab) will get better soon. I agree so far our planning has been far from stellar.

I’m not getting very good info in my state about when I can expect to get my first dose. My medical oncologist hasn’t been vaccinated herself, nor has anyone on her team, but some of my surgeon’s front desk staff has - the rollout seems very scattered. The best answer  I’ve been able to get is that I’ll get my first dose of the vaccine “maybe end of February,” but no one seems to know exactly when or where...

Patchy here too tbh.
I've heard of friend's parents in their 80s who got it a couple of weeks ago. My mum in her care home still doesn't have it yet. Neither has my uncle who is 76 and at high risk bc of other conditions. And apparently in some locations, GPs are being told to slow down bc they are running out of supplies in that area.....while people are queuing in other areas but receiving it after a long wait without a scheduled appointment.

Hello,

I am glad that the UK is doing well. We currently have almost 20 million doses distributed and waiting to be injected. I understand the need to prioritize healthcare workers and those in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. However, after that, we need to start vaccinating all of those that want to receive the vaccine and increase vaccinations until we reach a point of over one million vaccinations a day. Distribution by the end of the month at the current rate will exceed 50 million doses and we will have less than 20 million vaccinated. That is not going to come close to having an impact on cases, hospitalizations, and unfortunately deaths in the US.

I know that it is hard for the vaccine distribution to be "fair" to all people. I am trying to be patient and grateful that I am able to isolate and stay away from any risk.

However, I have a friend who drove to Florida with her husband. She arrived Thursday and got her vaccine on Friday.

I cannot get vaccinated because Colorado is only giving it to 70 years and older and I am 66.

It is hard to hear of different states doing things so differently. It is hard not to know when I might be able to be vaccinated. It is hard that I follow all the rules (no traveling, no getting together with anyone).

My understanding is that Florida is giving the vaccine to people over 65 before immunizing front line workers and I am not in agreement with that.

The isolation and loneliness is definitely affecting me.

LOL, I just opened my emails to this article:

Great and timely article! My W got her first dose and I think that technically, she was allowed to jump the line. She didn’t seek it out, she was told that she was eligible, and the hospital where she works gave her the vaccine. She works in health care but is able to do her work via computer so she isn’t required to have face to face patient contact. She clearly felt some guilt about it - we agreed that it probably wasn’t the intent for her to be in tier 1a, but then she came back pointing to the specific subgroup that she’s in and saying “see, they specifically called out my job.” She didn’t want to hear that 1a is only for people in her job who have in-person patient contact. But my feeling is, at this point, with our numbers so dangerously high, if you can get the vaccine without lying or misrepresenting yourself, you are doing more good by getting it than by waiting in the hopes that the people who are ahead of you on the list will get theirs. I’d get mine today if someone would give it, knowing my age and risk.

Just curious.... I haven't found anything on it in the news.....

That "mutant" Covid is running amuck, had heard about it a few weeks ago.... at the time it was in England, but it's jumped the pond and working it's way west.

The vaccine, does anyone know if it does anything to this new version? I wasn't in any rush to get the shot, but if it doesn't do anything to this new one..... what's the point?
Actually the whole vaccine has so much information it's hard to know what's right....... you need one shot, except you also need a second shot.... except you also need another shot every 8 months...... it's effective, except it's not unless you get them all.....what happens if you're late due to non-availability? The different brands are all the same, except they're not. Can you mix and match the different brands? Or does that break the chain? There's plenty of shots, except they're for the people who need them the most, except they're throwing away millions of shots because they didn't use them before expiring. The feds turned over the shots to the hospitals for distribution except when my folks call the hospital they're told they can get on a list. No one is responsible at a local level and no one seems to know what is going on, what the stock of shots available are, or how to get them in the people who want them now.

I'm so tired of this virus...... the nasty thought of being back to square one is a really terrible idea. I hope that's not the case.
My poor mom is so terrified of the existing virus, I don't even want her to know this new one is out there. Re: COVID-19, Coronavirus. Its real, stay safe! #5
#81: January 13, 2021, 01:10:12 PM
I will try and answer your questions SS. I want to state that a year ago, we really had not heard much about COVID. Since that time, a vaccine has been researched, shown to be safe and is presently being manufactured There has not been enough time to demonstrate how long the vaccine will give us immunity. Some vaccines, such as flu, need to be made and distributed each year depending upon what strain is circulating in the Southern Hemisphere. Other vaccinations such as tetnanus need a booster every 10 years.

Quote
That "mutant" Covid is running amuck, had heard about it a few weeks ago.... at the time it was in England, but it's jumped the pond and working it's way west.

The vaccine, does anyone know if it does anything to this new version? I wasn't in any rush to get the shot, but if it doesn't do anything to this new one..... what's the point?

To date, the mutation that we are seeing in North America does not seem to affect the efficacy of the COVID Vaccine. The vaccine is effective.

Quote
Actually the whole vaccine has so much information it's hard to know what's right....... you need one shot, except you also need a second shot.... except you also need another shot every 8 months...... it's effective, except it's not unless you get them all.....what happens if you're late due to non-availability?

Pfizer and Moderna require 2 shots. 3 and 4 weeks after the original shot to provide 95% protection. Johnson and Johnson's vaccine is made differently and will require just one shot.

The recommended time frame between shots is what has been researched and any other time frame doesn't have data to state what happens if the second shot is delayed.

Other vaccines , which have been around much longer also have time frames. Shingles for example is a 2 shot vaccine with the second shot given 2 months after the first.

These are the ideal recommendation as the data that is presently available from the manufacturer.

That doesn't mean that if the schedule is interrupted and you are not able to get the vaccine as recommended that your level of immunity would be seriously affected. But that has not been studied yet.

Since the vaccine is somewhat effective with 1 dose, there is thinking of some scientists that we should give everyone at least one vaccine.

I personally would prefer that we follow the guidelines. Those may change as more information becomes available.

Quote
The different brands are all the same, except they're not. Can you mix and match the different brands? Or does that break the chain?

Pfizer and Moderna are both mRNA vaccines so they are similar. It is recommended that you get the same brand for the second shot.

Johnson and Johnson is made by a different process so it is not the same as Pfizer and Moderna's.

Think Advil vs Tyelenol. Both will decrease a fever however they are different drugs with different mechanisms.

Quote
There's plenty of shots, except they're for the people who need them the most, except they're throwing away millions of shots because they didn't use them before expiring.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have a limited "shelf life" once they have been taken out of the freezer. Millions of doses have NOT been thrown away. There were some that were accidentally left out too long. There are 5-6 doses in each vial.  There are not yet "plenty of shots". The manufacturer is producing them as fast as they can but it will still be awhile until enough shots are available for the total poplulation.

Quote
The feds turned over the shots to the hospitals for distribution except when my folks call the hospital they're told they can get on a list. No one is responsible at a local level and no one seems to know what is going on, what the stock of shots available are, or how to get them in the people who want them now.

There is a problem regarding distribution of the vaccine. Each state has also been determining who should get the vaccine first and have not been following the CDC guidelines.

We need to be patient. The shots will become available and I would think that the distribution will become more streamlined.

Remember, we have never had to deal with something like this before. We are learning as we go along.
Quote
I'm so tired of this virus...... the nasty thought of being back to square one is a really terrible idea. I hope that's not the case.
My poor mom is so terrified of the existing virus, I don't even want her to know this new one is out there.

There is not a "new" virus. There is a mutation to COVID which is quite common.

If the virus mutates and the vaccine isn't working, the mRNA viruses can be adjusted to become more effective but at the moment that is not a problem because the mutations are not affecting the efficacy of the vaccine.

Quote
She told me the other day that I only need to hide for another year...... except the talking heads on TV say it'll be another two years (if you can believe them)..... meanwhile, time marches on and waits for no COVID.

The best source of information about COVID is to go to the CDC website at:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html

Your state public health department also will have up to date resources as well as an information line that you can call to ask questions.

When I worked in Toronto during the SARS epidemic in 2002, the information changed very quickly as more became known about the virus. Sometimes our public health department would receive several updates in a day..hard for us to keep up.

In the meantime, we know what works.

Social distancing.
Wear a mask.
Avoid activities that occur indoors.
Wash your hands.
No unnecessary travel.
Stay healthy by exercising, getting enough sleep and managing your stress level.
Stay home if you are sick.
Get tested if you have symptoms or have been in contact with another person who tests positive.
Get vaccinated when it is available to you.

You cannot get the virus unless you are exposed to it so the more you stay away from any place/activity that puts you into close contact with other people, the less infections will occur.

Our hospitals and medical personal are at their breaking point. The vaccine will help us to get back to a normal life but not for some time yet.

And it will still be necessary to follow these guidelines even after you get your vaccine as there is still a chance that you can become infected.

In the UK - the vaccine programme has started and so far been fairly efficient.  Thus far 2.6 million have received the first vaccine shot since it started just over a month ago.

The aim is 400,000 a week which is almost a million a fortnight.  Not only that pharmacies, and vaccine centres are now set up and authorised to administer the vaccine.

The info here is that the vaccines are efficacious against the mutated virus which has swept through the UK and that changes to the vaccine if necessary would be swift and effective.

The only change to the plan is that there is now a 12 week gap between the first jab and the second. The thinking here (which seems logical) is that whilst lockdown continues it makes more sense to get the first jab into as many vulnerable/priority people as possible because the first jab will certainly reduce the virus and its impact as the second just shuts the door to it completely.  It is a bold move but one I support.
The UK cannot survive another lengthy lockdown and the sooner we can reduce lockdown to a slightly lower tier such as tier 3 or even tier 2 which allows gyms and health centres to open as well as sporting and other activities for U18s, the better.

Nothing will happen here in terms of lockdown until at least mid Feb or third week (22nd) as that would have created a 6/7 week lockdown which did work when we had it in March 2020.

I am an optimist and I believe that, despite a minority stupidity who think its all a hoax and a conspiracy to get control and create a Big Brother state, we will prevail.
It is sad that there has been such a huge loss of life but i do think the figures in the UK are somewhat blurred. The death numbers are released with the statement that these are deaths that had a positive Covid test in the previous 28 days.  This is in itself is confusing and feeds the conspiracy theory.

In the meantime I just wish people would follow the guidance and work together towards returning to a better situation rather than perpetuating the same challenges.

Hello,

Quote
In the meantime I just wish people would follow the guidance and work together towards returning to a better situation rather than perpetuating the same challenges.

This is so true.  My wife and I have just been spending our free time at home and keeping a low profile. I have elderly parents and if anyone gets sick and needs medical treatment, the hospitals are filled and workers are exhausted. The numbers are just through the roof.

While I support everyone's right to peacefully demonstrate, to have thousands of people get on planes and fly to a destination, gather together (sans masks) and then fly back only creates more surges. The numbers in the US are staggering. We have almost lost as many people to covid as we have lost in WWII and covid hasn't been in the US for a full year.  The war is not against each other, but against the virus and we need to unite and work together to defeat it.

Quote

You are so right, however the statistics for the year in the US indicate 2020 will be the deadliest year for the US on record. The increase in deaths is much higher than projected. On an interesting note, auto accidents with fatalities also increased in 2020. Due to the decrease in traffic, many people are driving at higher speeds and having accidents. All so sad.

I’m not getting very good info in my state about when I can expect to get my first dose. My medical oncologist hasn’t been vaccinated herself, nor has anyone on her team,

This also frustrates me because people who need to be vaccinated. Nas should be at the top of the list to get vaccinated. Your oncologist is seeing patients who all are susceptible to this deadly disease. Not one is vaccinated. Nope, but the billing assistant who works at home gets his. There just doesn't seem to be a plan and when only one third of all available does have been administered, it only makes it more frustrating. I was happy to see that they are turning Disneyland into a mass center for all people over 65. I hope to get my mom vaccinated soon.

As for the rest of us? Who knows!

I sincerely hope we are able to get these vaccines into people sooner rather than later, both because the numbers are staggering (and I am in what has been and I expect still is the epicenter), and because while the vaccine is apparently effective against the known mutations so far, that may not be true if it continues to spread and mutate. I don’t have any idea when I will be eligible; I am hoping to get MIL vaccinated soon though I’m not sure how that will work because, while the pandemic has her stuck here in CA, she is not a CA resident. I hope she is able to get it despite that. And while I don’t begrudge anyone, even the lower risk people, the chance to get the vaccine early, I am so frustrated that people at real risk are being bypassed.

In the meantime,

Just a heads up though that this isn't your responsibility to work out. Your W works in the medical field and has already gotten her vaccine, so she should know the right channels to pursue to take care of her mom. Give yourself a break and let this one be on her. ;)

Thanks, R2T ... you’re right, there’s the fixer tendency again! Basically I won’t leave MIL in the lurch (I work in healthcare too though in a low risk area). But I won’t necessarily take it all on myself... I found the state’s phone hotline; I can leave it to W or MIL to call about it. Just as I am not great at “not my circus, not my monkeys,” I also struggle with, “not my problem to solve.” Work in progress...

Watching President Biden sign executive orders to stop the pandemic, to stop the deaths and to move us through to the other side. There is light now. Science will be followed as it always should have been. As President Biden stated, we are going to go into dark times, many more people will die of COVID before the tide turns.

I am so grateful that something is in place, a real plan to get this under control.

Another good bit of info, I am sure good news for a lot of parents and good for the well being of a lot of kids. Means with proper planning school reopenings can be done with minimal impact. There is rumblings to put all teachers on "essential worker" lists and get them all vaccinated which would be icing on the cake.

We have been very thankful to have in person learning.  Our High School's had to go remote for the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but other than that we have been doing in-person learning since August 17th, which was just a week late from the scheduled start date of August 10th.

More good stuff coming down the pike. FDA has approved a 15 minute rapid at home test. Its a shallow nasal swab so no crying! This should allow a lot of more things to get back to closer to normal while preventing spread. I wonder if it will be used in schools. Cost is around $30. Only catch is they can only make around 100K tests per month for a while.

Hello,

We did in person instruction until December. We only had three cases and all were traced to infections from attending function outside of the school. There was no spread within the classes. We only stopped after the hospitals filled and ICUs were beyond capacity. Still haven't returned back to in person instruction but will soon. Cases are dropping and in a couple of weeks, we expect ICUs to have adequate space.

My parents get their first shot this Sunday (Could have gotten it earlier but they received bad info from Kaiser) and my MIL and major Ready supporter got her shot today. I drove her and my wife to the vaccine site and it was really well organized and we were done in less than an hour from the time we arrived (She had to wait 15 minutes after she got the shot so they could observe her for any immediate reactions).

So, they are making progress with vaccines. However, it takes 3 weeks after the first shot to reach 80% and then another two to three weeks after the second shot to reach full capacity. Also it is  not know if vaccinated people can still spread to unvaccinated people. Once again best advice is to continue to wear masks, maintain social distancing, and wash hands often. We are really at a point where we can beat this disease if we can maintain our fight and keep the focus on keeping everyone safe.

For example, Ready's supper bowl bash has 6 guests (Ready, me, myself, I and my two dogs Lily and Coco) By the way, I am having Vietnamese eggrolls and fried rice and I ordered enough for six!

Be careful and be safe,

((((Ready))))

Great news about the home testing!

Ready, MIL and I were both able to get our first doses at one of those drive through mega sites, and we found them to be really well done. I had a Sunday morning appointment and was out in 40-45 minutes from when I arrived; it was just over an hour for MIL with a Saturday afternoon appointment. We were able to schedule the appointments for both the first and second doses at the same time, too. They seem to have a great system going, and I was heartened to see how many people were getting vaccinated - the appointment slots fill up quickly when released, and they run a lot of people through the sites.

It isn’t a return to normalcy, but it is an avenue of hope for something a little more connected to humanity than our current situation, even if that connection is still masked and is still a couple of months away.

A preliminary study that both shows significant reduction of spread after vaccination (not surprising but now backed up by data) AND showing this occurs after the FIRST DOSE only (10 days after inoculation). This is good because it supports the "one dose to as many people as possible first" approach (delaying the second dose) as being an effective strategy to reduce spread better than 2 doses to 1/2 the population. And reduces the concern about delaying the second dose if there are shortages.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is shown to drastically cut transmission of the virus.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/03/us/astrazeneca-coronavirus-vaccine.html

"The vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca not only protects people from serious illness and death but also substantially slows the transmission of the virus, according to a new study — a finding that underscores the importance of mass vaccination as a path out of the pandemic.

Researchers at the University of Oxford measured the impact on transmission by swabbing participants every week seeking to detect signs of the virus. If there is no virus present, even if someone is infected, it cannot be spread. And they found a 67 percent reduction in positive swabs among those vaccinated."

"The vaccine appeared more effective when the interval between the two shots was longer than the originally intended four-week gap, the Oxford and AstraZeneca researchers found. Among clinical trial participants who got two standard-strength doses at least three months apart, the vaccine was 82 percent effective, compared to 55 percent effective when the doses were given less than six weeks apart."

"The Oxford and AstraZeneca researchers also found that a single dose of the vaccine was 76 percent effective at preventing Covid-19. The data measured the three months after the first shot was given, not including an initial three-week period needed for protection to take effect."

This is also great but not surprising. FDA is considering guidelines for “tweaked” vaccines as new variants arise. The new variant vaccine won’t require the full set of data for revised vaccines, which means the new versions will be available much sooner if required. The safety is established, the new data would be for efficacy.

Tweaking COVID vaccines to fight variants won’t require big trials, FDA says

Hello,

The information is very good. I am hoping as we begin to mobilize our forces, we can begin to concentrate our efforts on getting the entire world vaccinated. While politics dominated the first 10 months of the pandemic, we are shifting to a more evidenced based approach to the virus. While we are observing a drop in California, I continue to remind others that we have gone from absolutely terrible to terrible. Our daily cases still exceed the summer surge and while ICU numbers are down, there is still no available space. With possible variants, it is imperative that we continue to wear masks, social distance, and maintain our bubbles as much as possible. And, when available, get vaccinated.  Johnson and Johnson should be available soon and Novavax is just around the corner. This is truly astounding as the experts opinions in June, 2020 was that on 11% of the vaccines would make it through stage 3.

I have been watching the vaccination numbers in Israel and it will be interesting to see how their numbers are in a couple of weeks as they are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else in first dose vaccinations (37.5%) and overall both doses (20%). Initial data shows that those that have been vaccinated have had extremely low infection rates and no hospitalizations. If the vaccination rates continue, they hope to be at herd immunity by the end of March.

Also, we are seeing some progress in treatments as well. The science is understanding the disease and how to help our bodies react without overreacting.

Good news on many fronts and we may be turning the corner on this dangerous virus, but just as D-Day didn't mean the end of the war, we still have many more months or working together to save lives.

Ready there definitely is a huge shift in this country even in the past two weeks. Something as simple as coordinated efforts, sending aid to states and localities and actually tracking vaccine distributions. These things are no brained, and yet we are just starting unlike the rest of the world. Israel is a great canary in the coal mine for results, fingers crossed!

UK is also doing pretty well, and the scientists are trying to sort gains from lockdowns from early gains from vaccinations.

Now to convince people to NOT have Super Bowl parties in person and kick off another mini wave...

Data showing double masking in a tight fit provides 95% protection if worn properly. Now if we can get people to do it.

CDC: Double-masking helps reduce exposure to the coronavirus
Medical procedure masks don’t always provide robust protection alone because air can leak around their edges.

Hello,

Super cool news. I've been double masking for over two weeks now. I don't like to because it really fogs my glasses up, but I had heard it may help against the UK and Ca variants.

People thought I was overreacting, but science saves the day!

I started double masking on my last shopping trip, with a cloth mask over my surgical one. Got some weird looks (even from other maskers), and the glasses fogging up is not fun. ;) But in the end, it will be worth it if it keeps everyone safer. Especially since my county has made it harder for seniors like my dad to get the vaccine by big procedural failure AND bumping out of state workers, regardless of age, ahead of him in the line. They're essential - it's teachers, food service workers, etc - but I think it should be based on where you LIVE, not where you WORK. /rant

Well contrast the basic sanity of this approach with a guy who was sitting at the restaurant tonight waiting for a takeout order with his mask on his chin. When my friend asked him to move back away so she could safely pick up her order, specially if he wasn't going to wear his mask properly, he laughed at her. But I think from her death stare he did move away.

More positive information. Israeli study shows that people who had Covid have immunity at least for 10 months. This is even after the antibodies in their bloodstream fade. When given the first vaccine dose they exhibited a full immune response immediately with or without visible antibodies. This also means vaccines will offer similar long term response. Not surprising but good to have confirmed.

“Israeli study boosts belief post-COVID immunity stays when antibodies fade
Massive immune response witnessed when small cohort of previously infected people get 1st COVID-19 vaccine dose, indicating they are well ahead of the game, Bar-Ilan team says”

Hello,

So far I have not heard of one scientific or legal reason not to wear a mask.  If we wore masks, practiced social distancing, avoided large gatherings, and washed hands, we would save thousands of lives and decrease the chances of variants emerging.

I celebrated that we were under 100,000 cases a day for the first time in months. Yet, there are countries that haven't hit 100,000 cases since the crisis began. This notion of "personal freedom" in the face of evidence really irritates me. Now you are seeing the same baseless claims and misinformation going out about the vaccines as well.  I read an article about a doctor that was vaccinated and got a rare blood disorder. At the bottom of the article, it then stated that the number of people diagnosed with this disorder was not higher this year compared to the past. Gee, if Ready get the vaccination and three days later, I get run over by a bus will there be an article "Possible link between covid vaccine and being run over by a bus"? It really makes me ponder why some of these articles and stories are carried in the first place. Okay, rant over.

I am really glad that you post your information Marvin. For what it is worth, in Israel, for the 500,000 that have been vaccinated in the study, no deaths from Covid.

Enjoy your weekend,

Thanks marvin for continuing to add to our knowledge about COVID and the vaccine.

I am getting my first COVID shot today at 2:10 pm.....it feels surreal that after a year, I start the process of being protected and will be able to protect others from this terrible disease once my body builds up immunity. I am "white privileged" to be able to get the vaccine today, and am very aware of that....

We must continue to educate people about the vaccine and provide calm and specific information to dispute the
anti-vaxers....what I have read recently is that 1/3 of Americans are not planning to get vaccinated and that is very serious in the effort to contain COVID and bring our lives back to a safer place.

[/b]

I would add stop traveling!!!!! People think that they are the exception, that they will follow all the protocols and they need a vacation or they need to visit family....

There have been great strides made, be patient and in a bit more time, you will be able to do those things.

News in this may already have been posted at some point but this was trending on Twitter today and piqued my interest, as someone who is already receiving a prescription megadose of 100,000 i.u. per week (yeah, that’s A LOT), yet my levels remain so dangerously low that I have been unable to begin a new treatment until we can get my levels up.

“This is a very important study on vitamin D and Covid-19. Its findings are incredibly clear. An 80% reduction in need for ICU and a 60% reduction in deaths, simply by giving a very cheap and very safe therapy - calcifediol, or activated vitamin D.”

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3771318

“The findings of this large and well conducted study should result in this therapy being administered to every Covid patient in every hospital in the temperate latitudes.

Furthermore, since the study demonstrates that the clear relationship between vitamin D and Covid mortality is causal, the UK government should increase the dose and availability of free vitamin D to all the vulnerable groups.”

These approaches will save many thousands of lives. They are overdue and should be started immediately.“

Again, I guess you have to actually be able to absorb the vitamin D in order for it to be effective, but most people don’t have issues with absorption so it seems like this will be interesting for a lot of people.

Just to report in on the vaccine,(phizer) my hero nurse got it on Saturday, and 6 hours later started with terrible covid like symptoms.
This is her first dose and remember she already had covid although tested negative.
She is still having covid like symptoms and it is now 48 hours later.

Quote
The vaccination was not pleasant. Within 5 hours, it had exacerbated all of my long hauler symptoms (shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, cognitive problems, inability to taste), plus i developed fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, body aches, joint pain, severe back pain, and night sweats. I expected this from the second shot but this totally blindsided me 🙁 but i guess that means it's working lol

I am hoping this all goes away soon and she starts really feeling better but I have to say right now that this is
worriesome.

I will report back in a few more days.

Oh that's too bad, OP.

They may decide not to give her the second shot.
I hope she feels better soon.

My daughter, who works part-time at a nursing home, had a few bad days after the second shot but it only lasted for two days. Chills, headache and very tired.

OP: it should fade after 72 hours. Have they discussed if she will get a 2nd dose or just one? How are the longer term symptoms, have they diminished at all?

Good questions but too early to know the answers yet, she is calling the long haulers clinic today to discuss.

And I think her bad reaction is because she already had covid so her body is gearing up to fight it again.

I hope she feels better soon OP.

"There have been some anecdotal reports of Covid survivors experiencing more severe side effects — feeling achy, sick or even feverish — after the first dose of vaccinations, Wohl says. “That makes complete sense, and shows you that the immune system is really responding to [the virus] in a much more vigorous way,” he says."

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/05/should-you-get-vaccinated-if-you-recovered-from-covid-expert-advice.html

I read a more technical version of this but have no clue where to find it again...basically it said the same thing and gave a more detailed explanation as to why.

I had my first dose of Pfizer on Saturday. Quite sore arm Saturday night and through the night, fatigue, achy, felt like I was coming down with something on Sunday. Had a 2 hour nap and rested the rest of the day. Still feeling a bit tired today.

I had signed up with an app at the clinic for followup from the CDC.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/vsafe.html

They contact me every day asking about symptoms. A great way for them to be monitoring and adding to their data.

More excellent news of how effective this vaccine is.

Israeli study finds 94% drop in symptomatic COVID-19 cases with Pfizer vaccine

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-israel-vaccine-idUKKBN2AE0Q2?utm_campaign=trueAnthem%3A%20Trending%20Content&utm_medium=trueAnthem&utm_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR1mf0d8tj0bmoadb4PgtBtIEFw5geZLCH4kRCFT072bmPeqaGj2VoMYB-w

Each person responds differently to vaccines. It does seem like there may be more side effects from the second dose and that means your body is responding as it should.

My first dose of the Shingles vaccine was really rough. The second dose was easier but other people have had the opposite reaction and some people barely have any reaction.

This is all normal though. There were a record 2 million doses administered on Friday in the US for a total of 50 million doses administered so far. The rollout is very well organized in Colorado.

Yes I read that too, xyzcf.  It does show the vaccine is working to build up your immune system.

My brother and his wife live in Denver, got the second shot with no ill effects at all (they are both over 75) but I also read sometimes older people don't feel the bad effects as much as younger people do.
I wish I could find that article because I don't remember why that is.  I would think it has to do with their immune system but I don't remember.

Has anyone else read that?

Less reaction is less common in people over 65?

Indeed, older patients are thought to have less of a reaction due to typical weakening of the immune system as people age, Parikh said: "The idea is that their immune system is not as robust as a young person's."

This was not the exact article I read but this was the reason.

I've been following these COVID threads.

As an educator I figure I'm exposed a good share of the time.

I contracted COVID in late December and was home isolated for two weeks.  It was pretty nasty but I didn't have to be hospitalized so luckier than many other folks.

The school district has received vaccines a bit at a time over the last two weeks.  I will not be eligible for the vaccine until all other district members who want it have the chance to receive it as doses become available.  The first 50 doses were Moderna.

FW - I'm nervous to get the vaccine as well, especially if I'm going to react poorly to it, already having had COVID.

XYZ - I also did not do well with either shot of the shingles vaccine.   :(

My appointment on Saturday was at 2:10 PM.  I was uneasy all morning. I have read a great deal about the vaccine, I worked in Infectious diseases and Immunization for years and this is the first time that I felt any uneasiness about getting a vaccine.

There is a great deal in the media and it's hard to distinguish what is fact and what is not. New information is occurring hourly and sometimes contradicting previous information (such as wearing masks).

But I know that the safety of this vaccine has been studied and not just since COVID. It has been in development for years. People a great deal brighter and educated then I have consistency provided data that the vaccine is safe.

I was really emotional when I received my first dose. The stress of COVID and the restrictions it places on our lives have taken a toil on everyone. This is the game changer, although there will still need to be precautions taken and monitoring needs to continue.

I think it is important to be able to express any concerns and I value the information that is shared on this thread.

Day 2 after the vaccine, I was still tired today and had another 2 hour nap on the couch.

But I also feel a sense of hope that I have not felt in a year.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a vaccine.

I hope that everyone who has any questions will be able to get factual information to answer any concerns they might have.

stillbaffled:

It's a nasty reaction but a strong response most likely means that the vaccine did what it is supposed to do stimulating our immune system so that we have protection from these viruses...I know it sucks though  >:(

OP so glad to hear, can't imagine how much a drain and weight this has been for both of you. Lots of good thoughts and wishes and for what its worth empathy. No one should have to go through it.

They are studying more rigorously the longer term loss of smell/taste and nothing definitive but I believe the guess is its not permanent but sometimes takes a while to fully resolve. Must be a small ray of sunshine to be able to taste something.

I am being told by a co-worker that her doctor told her mom who had Covid that she should wait 2 weeks after the 90 day window to get the vaccine.  So now I’m thinking I should wait until at least then.  Does anyone have any more info on this?

"Getting COVID-19 might offer some natural protection or immunity from reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19. But it's not clear how long this protection lasts. Because reinfection is possible and COVID-19 can cause severe medical complications, it's recommended that people who have already had COVID-19 get a COVID-19 vaccine. If you’ve had COVID-19, you might delay vaccination until 90 days after your diagnosis. Reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19 is uncommon in the 90 days after you are first infected."

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-vaccine/art-20484859#:~:text=Getting%20COVID%2D19%20might,COVID%2D19%20vaccine.

"Dr. Landers said having had COVID-19 before doesn’t really change your chances of experiencing side effects or not. “I really have not seen that in any scientific literature,” she said."

Like so much about this vaccine, new information is being unfolded daily.

My thoughts are that following all the precautions strictly will help to protect you about getting infected again. I am not finding anything significant to suggest that having had COVID would increase the side effects.

You could call CDC and ask specifically about that.

Unfortunately there is varied and confusing guidelines on this. So I like xyzf's suggestion. Calling CDC may be a good idea. How long ago did you have Covid?

It seems you are firmly outside of the 90 day window (or close enough that you should be good). You should just be prepared that your reaction may be more like the SECOND dose than a first. Which just means flu like symptoms for up to 72 hours. My sister had it on second shot and she didn’t have Covid, but she said basic pain killers helped a lot and she was fine (which seems to be the same anecdotal stories I have heard from a lot of others).

I am curious whether they will revise the guidelines for people who had Covid to simply get one dose. It seems you will have a full immune response on the first dose like others will have on second.

I also am wondering about this.  I had Covid the end of December and the vaccine is supposed to be available to me through the school district within the next two weeks so I'm under that 90 day window.

An interesting summary of why the Covid rates are starting to drop in case anyone is interested. As we start to come out of this the real tragedy is going to be the number of unnecessary deaths we (and some parts of the world) suffered simply because some people and some governments refused to accept reality and simply care more about the common good than their own.

COVID-19 Cases Are Dropping Fast. Why?
Four reasons: social distancing, seasonality, seroprevalence, and shots.

Hello,

Very good article and it emphasizes some positive points. I think that if we can continue to be vigilant and wait until we hit a high percentage of people vaccinated, then we can mitigate the impact of this virus. It appears that we will have variants and need boosters for years to come, but it seems we may reach the point by fall that normal life as we know it shall return.

The only open variable is between March and May. If we let our guard down, we may be subjected to another surge that will once again overwhelm our health system again. So while we can celebrate our progress, we need to still follow CDC guidelines, encourage friends and family to get vaccinated when it is their turn, and be patient as we approach herd immunity.

Until then, I hope everyone is safe and well,

(((((Ready)))))

More good news and information from further studies. First it appears that the Pfizer vaccine is 85% effective after one shot in 15-28 days, which means a single dose offers most of the protection. This supports the idea of vaccinating more of the population faster with a single dose rather than holding back a second dose. This could really speed up the spread of vaccines to a larger population.

Second the Pfizer/Moderna vaccines (mRNA) can be stored for two weeks in stored at higher temperature for up to two weeks (below freezing, but at what is considered regular pharmaceutical storage freezers rather than specialized ones), making it easier for the storage/distribution chains.

Both of these may greatly speed up the rate of vaccinations in the general population.

Quote
the next question will be what happens next year?

I just watched President Biden's visit to Pfizer's plant.  He outlined the many things that have an impact on the distribution of the vaccine and how things like the latest bad weather can affect the delivery of the vaccine.

A reporter immediately asked him when we would be able to get back to being normal.

Instead of stating an actual date, he clearly and transparently answered that there is no way to state for sure.

New information today is that Pfizer's vaccine may not need to be kept at minus 70. Some researchers are asking if giving one vaccine instead of two would give some immunity to many more people.

Scientists are already working on changing the vaccine if need be to cover the variants. They are collecting data to determine how long immunity will last.

It may be that we will need to be vaccinated regularly as right now, the belief is that COVID is not going to be eradicated from our planet anytime soon if ever.

What we know, is that even though some businesses are opened, doesn't mean that those activities are "safe". So travel, eating indoors in a restaurant, going to the gym, getting together with others who you don't live with...just because these are "allowed" doesn't mean that they truly are safe.

My point.

It's not possible to "predict" what will happen next year regarding this virus and the vaccine. People want "answers" and some of that is normal curiosity but it's also not possible as the scientific research continues to accumulate and evaluate data. Science is looking at many, many facets of the virus, it's treatment, it's mutations and how effective the vaccine is. We really need to follow the guidelines from the CDC, get vaccinated if you are able to and do everything we can to prevent the spread going forward.

The data is going to change, sometimes day by day. That is the only thing that you can say for sure.

I read the article, it interested me because I have already had covid, so I imagine that one shot could be enough for me.

My mum, who is 81 and practically confined to her house, is "hopping mad" because the vaccines stopped one day before her date for lack of vaccines. Here in Rio, they have stocked the booster dose for those who have had the first shot. So, we are waiting for a new shipment of the vaccines to restart the program. It has been promised for next week.

So, perhaps, if they can control the logistics, they could release the stock of vaccines they have held back...

At the same time, I have great confidence in the capacity of this country (Brazil) to produce the vaccines in due time. We have vaccinated almost 3% of an enormous population with all the difficulties that a third world country with a (currently) very inept government faces.

We have just been warned that here in Rio we have strains of the Manaus (Amazon)variety and UK too!

Mask up, wash hands and social distance, my dear friends!

Long Covid is a thing - I still have difficulty in taste/smell and the fatigue is, well, tiring...

Good article and then the next question will be what happens next year?
With follow on vaccinations of all people that already either had the first vaccines or the virus.

There are two factors: first when everyone is vaccinated now we have a “base” level of protection against this novel virus. So now it becomes kind of like seasonal flu. We may start making “boosters” based on variants that pop up that are not covered by the current vaccine, and this may be annual or as needed (less common). Good part is with the data available a new booster won’t take as long, as it won’t have to go through safety, only efficacy, tests.

And keep in mind as more and more people are vaccinated the virus has a smaller and smaller pool in which to propagate and mutate, reducing odds of new variants.

Just to update - I am getting my first vaccine on Monday - Moderna.

And my hero nurse is getting her second on March 6.
The first round let her taste come back a little and possibly improved her brain function although that is according to her
neuoroligist who is performing tests to measure it.

She still does not feel comfortable with her brain function.

This is one of the studies she is enrolled in

https://covidlonghaulers.com/

It is with Dr. Bruce Patterson from Stanford

he seems to think that their may be meds that can be taken to help the brain function.

I hope so.
