Off-Topic Forum Problems
OP: February 26, 2018, 10:41:20 PM
Sorry for the inconvenience of not being able to post for the last couple of days. The host was able to remedy the issue, but we are not out of the woods yet. This began as part of an upgrade that went awry and then I had someone from smf (we are an smf forum) do a new clean upgrade for me. He did not mess it up--he's been wonderful. It seems an old modification was causing a problem--even though it was no longer installed. As you can see the forum formatting was removed as part of the clean upgrade--specifically the topic icons. It may take me awhile to figure out how or if we can get the thread icons back. Sure, I can and will certainly upload the storybook and other images...but will we have to start over as we create threads now and leave all the old threads as they are now? Or are the icons we used stored with each thread somewhere in the database... I don't know. I was also using a mod that attached those icons to the thread--this was why we had two columns of icons when you looked at the list of threads. Hopefully those are stored in the database--once I re-upload the actual images. But that particular modification was apparently one that was causing issues... so I don't know what will happen yet. Please let me know (by PM) if you notice any glitches--I think we had some login issues, though I don't know if these are continuing. I may also send a test global PM. I sent one Sunday afternoon and it failed--but I did not know this because I got two copies of it in my inbox, so it looked like it worked until I asked others and no one had received it. Please be patient as we may find some glitches and as I try to get our forum back to where it needs to be...and thanks for still being here.

Okay, one glitch or problem seems to be that I cannot type in paragraphs--that initial post was actually separated into a few paragraphs and the system just shoved them all together--so I am sorry that it is difficult to read.

I noticed yesterday that when I tried to respond to posts it just brought up an error messages. This seems resolved at the moment.

When clicking on unread posts since last visit it no longer brings up a list of all the unread stories that you aren't ''attached to''. Now it is either blank or just a few stories from those who have posted directly between visits. Meaning if I want to catch up on anyone else's story from the week you have to go through the community button and search through all the threads manually...if that makes sense?

Sorry for the GIANT icons. I actually reduced their size a couple days ago, but somehow it is not coming through--and the file sizes are about  same dimensions as the storybooks. I thought that it might just take time to repopulate through the large board--yesterday the green monster finally came through reduced. But the mirror and the heart-ears are still huge and now the green monster has reverted to the angry emoticon. That is also weird. When I first started the forum I edited the emoticons, replacing the files with my icons while keeping the original emoticon names. But now that monster has its own name AND...this is what is really strange...in the admin section where I edit them, I have it properly set AND it shows the green monster and not the angry emoticon. Why was it fine yesterday? So this is something to ask at the smf support forum.

What I have discovered is that the control buttons do not always have the desired effect or that the tag is no longer visible. If one knew the original tag format [ tag ] [ /tag ] THOSE tags still work although there is no longer a button for them... It seems that the WYSIWYG interface has changed in the newest version and some things are no longer supported by buttons   The Emoji buttons also no longer have any effect but, again, if one knew what characters resulted in which Emoji, one can type the character string directly and that DOES work... :o

Taking the liberty of posting this here so you'll have the info onsite for future reference. Been poking around your forum cleaning up the recent 2.0.15 upgrade, some things you should know.

- Login failures: There were two login problems, one of which I fixed a few days ago, the other I'm working on.

As with most custom themes, header login did not work in Curve Multi Color due to missing session check. This is a security feature that was added in 2.0.14, and package manager fails to update header login in themes other than default Curve. I fixed it, but would have to be fixed again if you have to reinstall theme. No big deal.

The other problem is invalid referring url, which was generating a lot of errors. Most of this seemed to be from members trying to login at http://www.mlcforum.theherosspouse.com/index.php, possibly using old bookmarks. First login attempt fails, second one works. I've added .htaccess to your forum root which rewrites http://www.mlcforum.theherosspouse.com/index.php to http://mlcforum.theherosspouse.com/index.php. Still logging some of these errors, but all failed logins are now coming from 36.57.*.* ips, which appear to be chinese spammer. This could be anti-spam blocking them, I'm looking into that.

- Error log: Speaking of errors, you had just over 532,000 errors in your forum log for 30 days, that's approx. 17,700/day, 740/hr. Keeps the server busy, bloats your database. Admins should check the log regularly, address problems that are generating errors.

- Database backups: Are you backing up your database regularly? You have 1.3 gb of content, as far as I can see there's nothing in cpanel indicating your host does automatic backups. Manual backups are problematic, tried downloading a gzip backup last night, forum went down due to exceeding resource limits so I cancelled it, but manual backup does appear to work. Your cpanel supports cronjobs, something could be done with that.

- Paid subscriptions: As per this, you will need to convert to https by June of this year, or paid subs will stop working. There's a support guide to http -> https conversion here. Wouldn't attempt this until you get all the bugs out of the forum upgrade and everything runs smoothly for a while.

- Host limits: The original problem with the 2.0.15 upgrade was you had exceeded max disk capacity, file uploads were failing. That's been fixed, you're currently using 50% of increased capacity (5.86/11.72 gb). Of greater concern is forum went down while d/ling database backup. You might want to consider moving to a better host.

I'll enable notification on this topic, please post any problems you notice here. Leave me as admin until you're satisfied everything is squared away.

Almost forgot, there was a problem with the path to /cache directory, fixed that.  It may have been the reason icons were not updating.

I don't know if this was mentioned but it seems the spacing is off when posting or replying.

They paragraphs are not spacing correctly so the posts come out hard to read, no proper breaks.  Even though we are putting them in there.

If you space 3 times it seems to put the breaks in.

Sir, after looking at a few things, I'm beginning to think it may be me who is having a spacing problem.  Maybe just need some adjusting.
So no problem.
Thanks for responding.

Got to be brief... I am putting in paragraphs, but have not had luck with them formatting so far, so this is likely to come out as a big or little paragraph. I think it is the WYSIWYG mod that allows for formatting posts. I bought it a couple of years ago and I think we might have had some issues and maybe I uninstalled it back then. But when reinstalling mods the other day I did not recall that I had uninstalled it.  This is just a guess right now. Sir Osis: I think the host said they do daily backups...I know they did, but I will check and see if that includes database backups. Regarding https: Interesting...I just started researching what I need to do to convert the blog, forum and main site to https. I got a standard email from my blog host today saying the auti SSL certificate is installed. So that sounds like step 1 is done for the blog...? More to address, but I can hear a lot of noise from the kids upstairs and need to go rescue Chuck! Yup, paragraphs disappeared when I previewed and now are even gone in the typing box. But others don't have this problem?

I found that you have to hit enter/return twice. It seems like it's setup now to double space between lines.

I'm noticing single line breaks appear to be double in post editor, but they preview/post as single, you have to hit two to double space paragraphs, but after first preview they become normal.  Think this is the wysiwyg mod.  WYSIWYG has been problematic, the core feature in 2.0 is buggy and not recommended.  You're using the SMFPacks WYSIWYG Editor mod, first time I'm seeing it, but wouldn't be surprised if it also has problems.  I'm seeing a lot of server errors in Subs-Posts.php, they seem to occur in clusters, but don't think they're related to this.  I'll drop you back to php 5.6, see if it helps, some of the older mods aren't updated for php 7.

Re: backups, most hosts do server backups daily, but often only keep them for 2-3 days, then they're gone.  Some will charge you to restore db from server backups.  My host (Crocweb) runs R1Soft in cpanel, it backs up everything in the account daily and keeps it for 30 days on remote servers, so even if host server gets nuked, backups are elsewhere.  I also have cronjobs running that backup all dbs daily and saves them 30 days on host server.  This wouldn't work for you due to the size of your db and current disk space limits.

I'm going to block ip 36.57.*.*, keeps logging errors.  You don't have any members in that range.  It'll be in .htaccess if you need to remove it.

The topic prefix header in message template is borked, icons are not displayed because path is incorrect.  It's looking for /CurveMultiColor/images, should be /Curve_Multi_Color/images.  This will affect other icons as well.  Have you changed anything?  Looks like you may have installed different version of the theme.

Well, as you guys may have noticed I reinstalled the mod that gives us the topic pictures--but since the images are not coming through, you may only have noticed that there is a list of stuff at the top of the board, but no images. UGH
I uploaded the images and tried a few times when they did not come through. The mod itself works--if you want to sort threads by a certain topic icon, just click the name of that icon in the list at the top and it will show only those threads--and that by itself is pretty cool I guess.

I've got just under 30 minutes to work now because I promised Chuck he could nap while I make and serve lunch...then preschool drop-off, Speech Therapy for Sissy at her school, then sign tax paperwork at accountant's office across town...
At least Chuck is making dinner tonight! ;D

i am going to look at the image mod quickly, but then need to read more about converting all three sites to https. That may be my big project, darn, I was trying to make getting the book edited again and then out in e-book my project. SIGH such is life and I do love my life with my adorables! ;D

  Ok, there were several things wrong, I've fixed the ones I see.

- You reinstalled CurveMultiColor theme in different directory, /Curve_Multi_Color (dated earlier today), this broke all the image links in prefix mod.  Uninstalling/reinstalling the mod doesn't fix this if you retain mod data, if you don't, you have to reconfigure mod from scratch.  Fixed image links in database, should be ok now.

- Your custom images were not in /Curve_Multi_Color/images, and at least one was missing from a subdir.  I've uploaded the entire /images directory from backup.

- At least one image in prefix settings was set for https and failed to load, changed it to http, it works.

There may be other glitches in the theme, would be related to these.

I'm seeing login problems now. I can get in from my phone but get a session verification failure from my PC.

Using different browsers (Chrome & Firefox) as well as clearing the cache completely didn't help.....

I'm getting session verification failure on my phone.  Saying my session has times out. Try logging out and logging back in.
But I can't log out either.
Some post go thru, but most will not.

Seems to be a rolling issue... OP was not able to log in or post, I could get in and post from my phone but not from a PC (Session Verification Failures) until about 20 minutes ago and now it is working for the PC (Don't know about the phone since I logged out there)

Posting seems to be working as well...

Some of our members down under haven't had any problems at all so ???  ....

I finally just got back on.

Maybe this is a host issue, not sure, but we shall see.

I kept getting the following message

Quote
Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

Also need to figure out if we can re-install our SPAMMER MOD as we are getting more spammers now.
Last night I deleted another one that was posting.

I guess we are still having some data base issues as no one seems able to start a new thread.

For those that are trying I suggest adding on to your current thread and when this starts working again we can split them off and
start new threads.

We are generating this error message

Database Error
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.

Sorry!!

I just uninstalled the akismet and tested a new post--same error.
Then I uninstalled the forum firewall mod and tested a new post--same error.

Those are the two newest mods. And as OldPilot has said on the mod board, we are still getting a lot of SPAM registrations requesting approval, whereas they were blocked when we were using Stop Spammer, but Stop Spammer does not have a new version for our upgraded smf version.

I have to go in a few minutes to preschool pick-up, but will head over to smf when I get back.

Database errors are being caused by anti-spam mods, you currently have four installed, there may be some stray code from installimg/uninstalling mods.  Not a good idea installing multiple mods for same purpose, they may interfere with each other.  Do you have a files backup from before this problem started?

Thanks Sir Osis...and sorry.

I backed up each time I added a new mod and the server told me that they back up every night.

I added multiple SPAM mods because I thought each one might cover a different area of antispam--I think it was the firewall mod that even suggested a few mods--unfortunately Stop Spammer and Bad Behavior with Project Honeypot were included on their list and those are not working here.

Re: Forum Problems
#46: March 20, 2018, 02:20:56 PM
It was a database problem, one of the mods added 'spam' field with no default value to _topics table.  It should work, but didn't.  I believe errors were caused by a mysql bug, it doesn't affect core code, but causes problems for some mods.  I set default value to 'null', stopped the errors and shouldn't affect mod.

Package manager creates a backup whenever a mod is installed, they're in /Packages/backups/.  If you install/uninstall/reinstall mods, things get confused and backups may not undo damage.

Your cpanel has a backup utility, but it doesn't allow automatic backups.  Most hosts do daily server backups, but many only save backups for a few days, then they're gone.  Some will charge you to restore files or databases from server backups.  You should confirm with your host how long backups are saved.  My host uses R1Soft, which backs up all files and databases daily and saves them for 30 days on remote server.  I also have cron jobs running backup daily and save 30 days in my account.  Your cpanel supports cron jobs, but you don't have sufficient disk capacity to do this.  You're currently at 87%, you can view usage in cpanel.  Might want to ask your host why there's almost 4 gb in 'Files in hidden subdirectories'.

That's from your browser, it will do that on any site that's not https, but it shouldn't cause multiple logins.  Which browser are you using?

Hi, is there a way to customize the font, etc. to our own preferences?

The new web template is hard to read when I access the site on my phone.

Thx in advance.

Not to mention that there are a couple of VERY important functions that have been turned into icons -  showing new posts in threads that one follows and showing all new posts since last login... For the Mods, this can be crucial because it lets us catch any newbie posts quickly before they get lost in the pages.....

Later - OK, I have been on the Forums for an hour on a PC now and I can say without reservation that a Serifed Font is the absolute WORST for reading long term from a screen... It is great on paper but on a screen it is abysmal.

Uhmmmmm .... I don't think it IS a "problem" per se.  There has been a new CMS (Content Management System) template applied to the site that has rearranged things and changed the fonts, turned text links into icons (It took me about an hour to figure out that the three little icons next to my screen name were to show my profile, to show all new posts since my last visit and to show new replies to my posts... )

OK, I've just proved it too... I changed the font via BBS command to Verdana here in this post and it shows up correctly... It seems that the default is now TNR and that is a miserable fnt for a web site...

Well, your font is so much more user-friendly.  Got my eyes sorted!
Since I don’t understand (OK, I don’t want to try) all the technical side of the site, I hope someone steps in changes the psychedelic font and the jarring colours soon.  Is it just me taken aback by the background colours???

I’m just not understanding any of this!

I found the old site easy to use! I know I’m stressed but this site change has really upset me today

I don’t understand anything, how to use the site or what anyone is talking about!

I’m a real technophobe and come here for help and advice not to get so stressed that I can’t even do anything!

Why has this been made so hard to use and understand!

Now I can see unread topics and replies to topics I have posted on...

I will have to try later on my phone...

Easy to write but difficult to read (uncomfortable to the eye as others have noted)

I to find the colors very jarring,makes me dizzy.

It doesn't "fit" on my iphone screen well, I need to look at it turned to the horizontal plane and even then it is in a weird position.

Did HS request these changes or did the provider do them?

I’m really hoping this is not a permanent change. This is very hard to navigate on a mobile device - since I never access from the computer this renders the site practically impossible for me to use. I’m disappointed because I do look forward to interacting on here.

Sir Osis has not been here in a few weeks so it is not likely to be him.

Sorry for not responding sooner, for reasons unknown I've not received any topic notifications until today.  The theme has been changed, and at least a couple of new mods have been installed since last I was here.  The theme determines font size and face.  I would guess new theme was installed to make site more responsive for mobiles, but apparently it's not doing a very good job.  There are other mobile themes available for 2.0.

For now, I've allowed members to select a theme in Profile -> Modify Profile -> Look and Layout -> Current Theme.  You can change back to the previous theme, Curve Multi Color.  I'll get back to this tonight, let me know what you'd like to do.

I'm switching everyone back to Curve Multi Color (your previous theme), and will install Responsive Curve mod, which is designed for mobiles.  It doesn't affect the main theme (PC view), I installed it on another forum, very few complaints.  I don't use a phone, so you'll have to post feedback whether it's good or bad.

Tell me about it. I run a Web Site for my church and when we went from Contenido to Joomla, you'd think the Apocalypse was upon un... We did manage to get most of it straight and Joomla did work better for mobile devices so...

Thanks Sir Osis for getting the old theme back - For me, the Serifed Font was the killer...

How can I get HS to fit my iPhone screen. It is too big and even horizontally I have to swipe back and forth to read it.

Never had a problem before

That may be happening because we increased default font size in Curve Multi Color per an earlier request.   Responsive Curve mod is designed around default Curve settings, larger font may be causing it to overflow on iPhone.  I'll take a look at the css when I get a chance, maybe it's fixable.

Is it happening on other phones?

I have Android 8 and if I use it to reply to a topic, the reply window suddenly explodes so that maybe  2-3 characters show. Once I pinch it back to normal it is fine...

I've switched everyone to default Curve theme, that's what the responsive mod was written for.  Still having problems?

I was wondering about that too. And I'll be a B about this: this overused color scheme just reminds me of a ubiquitous site that can be really unpleasant and triggering for LBSs, seeing as our spouses have all gone back to teenage wasteland. :P (Never mind that it didn't exist when they were real teens!)

The screen is now blue because the theme is Curve original and the previous default was Curve Multi-Color--that was the one with the little colored buttons that let you choose your color scheme. You can still do that in your profile as Sir Osis described the other day.

As for me, I am practicing with theme creation in a testforum I have created.  I'm only interested in colors and a header and the smf wikis have one about creating a theme--based on this curve. Well I'd be interested in more, but it's not a big deal, so I'm only focusing on colors and a header...it would be nice to have links to the blog and main site or the main site/blog nav bar too, but no big deal I have 5 tiny adorables who are a big deal!

I've switched to default Curve (blue) to see if mobile problems persist, no one has answered that.  I need to determine if the problems are caused by Curve MC.  Have no way of determining that myself as I don't use a phone.

Adding links to main menu is simple, you just add them to button array in Subs.php.  Look for 'all the buttons'.

The main difference between default Curve and Curve MC is the colors.  In the remote event you can all agree on a color variant from Curve MC (::)), I can apply it to default Curve if it solves the mobile problem.

Sir Osis, is it going to still be possible to change to Curve Multi Color/is the option going to remain? That is the one I had changed back the other day, and did it today again. Some of the blue tones are a little upsetting to my eyes, the grey-green is the one tone/colours that work for me.

RCR, I think the new forum should have a colours change option.

I have changed it myself before you did because I still caught the blue. What I want to know is if, in any future design changes, there will still be the option to return to Curve Multi Color.

Having Thread Starter under the person«s name doesn't make much sense, takes space and is repetitive. If it is an idea to be keep thread starter should be in much lower font than the person's name.

If Curve MC works for everyone using pc or mobile, we can stay with it, so it'll be same as before.  If I can't resolve the mobile problem, my suggestion would be to retain the profile option to change theme, with Curve MC and default Curve as the available options.  PC users can stay with Curve MC, mobile users can select default Curve, and those who use both will just have to choose which one is less annoying.  I can also modify default Curve so it displays the same colors as MC green (or any other variant, but only one).  It'll be up to RCR, I believe she posted she's working on another theme, but we may end up with the same problem.  I may still be able to fix the glitch, but I have to wait for feedback from mobile users because I don't use a phone.

I'm not seeing 'Thread starter', that would be from a mod.

Oh, ok, that's supposed to be an image, but the image is missing and you're seeing the alt text.  In IE11 I see a small dot, and mouseover pops up a 'Topic Starter' label.  That's the TopicStarter mod, for some reason the image is missing.  I'll uninstall/reinstall it.

I tried refreshing the browser by taping on the circular arrow on the top right and it did not make a difference.

What I saw before was the size of the site fit perfectly on the screen for several years. Now I have to continuously try and make it smaller so I ca read or type on my phone. No other apps function that way and HS did not either.

The blue color fit the screen. Sorry I do not have any computer expertise socambexplainingxas best I can. Good luck

Maybe RCR changed it back to green, is yours still blue or green now?

From me looking at your profiles it looks like they should be set at green.

I haven't done anything, but the default is now back to Curve Multicolor and I have always set the default for that as the green--so the green is what anyone who is not logged in would see as well as anyone who has not changed their color. I think Sir Osis did it.

Just got on, I left everyone on Curve MC green last night, that's the theme you've been using.  Still trying to determine why responsive works in default Curve and not MC.  Cobbling together a green variant of default Curve for you to try, up to my eyeballs right now, will get to it shortly.

@RCR - did you see the info re: adding menu links?

I have to pinch the image on the phone but that's ok.

p.s. Managed to post on phone too. Still green on phone.

Been tinkering with it.  You shouldn't have to pinch it on phone, should now fit correctly across screen if you're seeing responsive theme (it looks different than pc theme).  I'm seeing it correctly in android silk.  Just fixed the header logo, it should also fit.  If you're seeing something different, can you post a screenshot?

Going offline shortly, won't be back on until late tomorrow.  I've left everyone in Curve Multi Color (green), disabled theme change and MC color selection.  You should all be seeing same thing.  Comments and screenshots would be helpful.

I tried attaching but the size restriction doesn't let me.

If nobody else manages to help, I could send it by e-mail

When I go to reply to a post, this is at the bottom of the screen:

Attach:  (Clear Attachment)  (more attachments)Allowed file types: doc, gif, jpg, mpg, pdf, png, txt, zip
 Restrictions: 2 per post, maximum total size 192KB, maximum individual size 128KB
Note that any files attached will not be displayed until approved by a moderator.
(didn't come out exactly like it looks)

Should this be there?  I've never seen it before.

I changed member options so Attachments is uncollapsed, otherwise you have to click on it to get file browser.  It's a profile option, most members don't know it's there, makes it a bit easier to do attachments.  Just taking a look at permissions, regular members were not allowed to post attachments, changed that to allow.  It's set for mod approval, left it that way.

Last night I had THS back to normal and now it’s gone all weird again!

Can someone tell me what’s happened or what’s going on please?

It’s hard to use like this! Is it another teething problem?

Been trying to get the responsive mod working, so have been changing things a bit.  Right now you should be seeing the green theme you've been using for a while on pc, and a responsive version of same theme on mobile.  Same colors, but things are resized to fit on small portrait display.  Don't use a phone, but I can view it on Kindle Fire in android Silk, and in FF61 using responsive design mode.  Don't know how close either of these are to what members here are seeing on phones, so I'm working somewhat blind.

I’m afraid I don’t understand any of this.

I just hope THS gets back to normally functioning very soon as it’s so hard to navigate my way round again!

I don't know what your seeing.  Are you using pc or phone?

Just installed mobile-desktop theme on test forum, doesn't look anything at all like the theme that was installed here and everyone hated.  I'll tinker with it a bit.

Everybody should now be seeing mobile-desktop theme (it's a blue theme), this is how it looks out-of-box (well, just one minor change to fix header logo).  Mobile layout seems to be a lot better than responsive curve.  It can be customized to suit, how does it look/work on phones?

That's because I had already customized the colors and that was what they were complaining about.  I had also added my large header and that may have been causing the big fitting on phone issues. I guess that header is not responsive--it's just an image.

I've been in subs.php and have been reading the How do I add buttons to SMF 2.0 wiki. I'm practicing with a clean install on a test forum so I can mess up, undo and try again and again. I've worked with CSS at my main site quite a bit, but have not worked with php at all, so maybe that is the problem.

I started with a simple test...
'home' => array(
            'title' => $txt['home'],
            'href' => $scripturl,
            'show' => true,
            'sub_buttons' => array(
            ),
            'is_last' => $context['right_to_left'],

Changed 'title' => $txt['home'],
to 'title' => $txt['community-home'],

the words disappeared and the button reduced in size to 'fit' the lack of text. Later--after testing other bits--I tried changing 'home' => array( to 'ho' => array(
This was when I got a really unexpected result... The home button was still there, but a new button without text--so small--was at the end of the list of buttons. So weird I started laughing.

I tried adding the code from the wiki and got a button where I put it--just before the login/logout button.

'menu_action' => array(
            'title' => 'text for menu',
            'href' => $scripturl,
            'show' => true,
            'sub_buttons' => array(
               'sub_menu_action' => array(
                  'title' => 'text for sub-menu',
                  'href' => $scripturl . '?action=newaction',
                  'show' => true,
                  'is_last'=> true,
               ),
            ),
         ),
Since that worked I changed

            'title' => 'text for menu',
to
            'title' => 'Heros Spouse',
without the apostrophe because that made it fail, I got a new button--still not adding url. It even came with a dropdown.
But when I tried adding two buttons (blog and mainsite), only the 2nd one I added showed up...HUH?

Still not sure exactly how to add the url--quotes, anything special added to the code since it is external?

Colors can be changed without affecting anything else.  Members were complaining about the awful font, and the theme looked quite different overall.  I'm not concerned about customizing the theme, would like to come up with a decent mobile version that everyone can use.  This one looks a lot better and more functional than responsive curve.  Let's let it run until tomorrow, get some feedback from mobile users.

Post the links (just the urls) for the buttons you want to add, I'll do the code for you.  There's a mod that adds menu buttons, but it's really not necessary once you know how to do it.  In php (and javascript) you have to escape quotes that are inside an echo statement or text string, like this -

Code: [Select]

     'title' => 'Hero\'s Spouse'

Just put a backslash in front of it.  Opening delimiter is single quote, so next single quote the compiler sees is closing delimiter unless it's escaped, it breaks the string and crashes the script if it's not immediately followed by valid php code.

Can you stop with the changes? I can't change anything, colour, go back to the previous design, nothing.

This blue thing looks atrocious, the font is terrible to read, the whole think looks awful in a computer, the icons are gone again - just blanks where they used to be as is the name of the thread owner. The signatures are also confusing, etc.

Please make the old design still available, with colours options. The board is unreadable again.

Las time before this I post, on Watcher's thread, all was normal, grey-green and the old design - that, aside from being back to everyone, I had choose to have for myself because I do not like or can read or do a thing with this new one.

I think you need to find a way of allowing the old, normal design and colours for computer and find some plug-in or wahetever for phones.

As for screencaps, no one is really considering posting a screencap of their phone or computer here, right? We have user names for a reason. Sending them to Sir Osis makes much more sense.

Many of us do not use the forum on a mobile. You, and RCR, are too worried with mobile user, negleting the rest of us who do not use the board on a phone.

Bring the Curve mode/version back. This is impossible to navigate, read or do anything other than find this thread.

I totally agree with Anjae,

Whenever I log in it’s changed again. A few days ago it was back to normal but since then it’s changed a few times and virtually impossible to use!

I always use my iPhone to post and have no problems with that normally!

Please someone sort this out once and for all

I use iPad.  The font is so small that I need to expand it, and then only 2/3 of each line can fit on the screen.
I’m forever swiping the screen left to right, right to left, left to right, right to left...  Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Why fix something that worked well???

I am answering this on an iPhone and although the layout takes some getting used to, it at least fits the screen without problems in the vertical position, whereas in the sideways position, it is a little more difficult but it gets there ;)

The Font Face has now defaulted to Comic Sans which is also a bit ... odd....

I do have to kick the font size up although I am on a PC with a 19" diag screen but the default pitch was too small to comfortably read... I haven't tried on my Android Phone yet...

The blue color and the font make it much harder on my eyes..very harsh. The version on my iphone is also not any where as good as the original version.

Not sure why these changes keep happening, so far I do not see any that are "better" than the original design. I never realized how color can have such an impact...perhaps it doesn't bother all people the way it does me.

I mainly use the forum on the computer and it looks like the option to change the color scheme and layout is gone.

It is. It used to be possible to change it on our profile, but not anymore.

The font is not only too small but sort of floats/seems to be in a vacuum and seems to be trembling. And the whole think, font included is too shiny/bright. It hurts the eyes. At least it hurts mine.

The countour of the logo also hurts the eyes and the purple on the blues looks terrible. Same for the symbol.

"Remember The Hero's Spouse Mission Statement. Love each other, Love your Spouses and Love yourselves. The Unconditionals apply to everyone." this does not real well. Sort of a greyish blue upon greyish blue and the font is too narrow. Larger size and blod may help. But I think a more "round" font is much better than a sharp slidding one.

"Support for Dealing with a Spouse in MLC" this is also almost impossible to be seen.

The buttons look like for a mobile, but are silly/childish on a computer (pretty much like everything these days).

And lets not mention how absurd it all looks when we are posting, the emojis, the "subject" and "message icon", the super difficult colourn scheme, etc.

Please find a way of allowing those of us who want to to revert to the normal way. Or set it for the normal way with an option for mobile.

This mobile-desktop theme is not good at all, Curve Multi Color is perfect for the board. And it seems you have found a way of having curve responsive, so, working for curve, since it pleases users better and can be made responsive seems much more logical.

All these changes are much, much worst than the original design. If the issue the original design responsive on mobiles, find a solution for it rather than change a perfectly good and working design both on mobile and computer.

Could you change mine back to Curve? Thanks!

Edit - Done! - OP

Another edit...OP, did I ask for the wrong thing? I might have...I still have the blue one with Comic Sans. I would like the green version, whatever that's called. Thank you!

Oh...I need the MULTICOLOR one! Oops!

OK, for what it is worth, I looked at it on my Phone (Android 8  ) using Chrome as the browser and it is quite nice. The font is arial so it is readable, it fits on a single vertical OR horizontal screen and is quite responsive...

It is, of course, headache-inducing blue so I will NOT be looking at it in the evening as blue is a color that interferes with sleep...

So, in short, the mod used for mobile seems to be working except for the blue color.... What it has done for the PC-based version is an abomination with comic sans as the default font and a font pitch of 8 (tiny)...

     'title' => 'Hero\'s Spouse'

Just put a backslash in front of it.  Opening delimiter is single quote, so next single quote the compiler sees is closing delimiter unless it's escaped, it breaks the string and crashes the script if it's not immediately followed by valid php code.
I was tinkering with different fonts and went to bed leaving a serifed font up and had not gotten to changing it yet, though I did not like the sanserif font that was and is default now--it seems similar to comic sans (Oh, just saw that Ursa said it is comic sans). But switching the font is not hard to do once I figure stuff out--since I have been practicing on the test forum. I think Verdana is nice and basic and people are used to it since it is so common. I agree that it is also too small.

I knew there was a way to include the apostrophe, just didn't know what it was!

Here are the button links I would like:
Title: Main Site OR Hero's Spouse Home
Link: https://www.midlifecrisismarriageadvocate.com/

Title: Blog
Link: https://loveanyway.theherosspouse.com/

I saw a few mods and figured the same thing...why add a mod if I can learn to do it myself.

Can you stop with the changes? Many of us do not use the forum on a mobile. You, and RCR, are too worried with mobile user, neglecting the rest of us who do not use the board on a phone.
No. This is not about anyone being worried. It is about creating a site that ALL users can access AND that Google thinks they can access. A responsive theme is meant to change according to the device the user uses--meaning it does the opposite of neglect, it considers everyone's viewing experience. Since many mobile users were able to view the site fine it is more about Google. They rank sites according to mobile friendliness--responsive design. Our original theme did not rank well even though it was working for many mobile users. It is important that people are able to find us and for that I need to please not only our human users, but Google.

The design process will settle into something workable, but while trying goes on, there may be times of difficulty.
I am working on a test forum to avoid bothering anyone and breaking the site, but Sir Osis need feedback from mobile users and he knows what he is doing (unlike me ;D ).

This responsive nightmare is something I need to do fix at the main site too. This blue theme passes at Google. I don't like the colors either, but now that I know how to change them, it's not going to be a big deal. I won't change the colors until we decide on an actual theme that can work for everyone because I don't want to waste my time changing things over and over.

I also am not yet great at changing colors. I have the basics, but cannot tell what piece of code changes what--sometimes I can tell, but it is amazing how many colors are in the design. Just to see I copied the code and removed everything but color codes and counted them. There were maybe 20-30 that were just shades of green--many that looked almost the same. I personally don't want that many variances of the same color. I have a design file where I keep my brand colors and accents and I think I should add the more muted/greyish greens to that file.

At my test site I got some (SOME) buttons changed. It was so easy. I changed the background and hover. I did it in two places for each--background and hover, but later when I did find for the color code I only found it once...so I'm really not great at this yet! I also have one set with one background/hover and the other set is reversed! that in itself means to me that those colors are in there twice!

This stuff is not meant to be a big deal to users because it is supposed to be unnoticeable. Design should be so natural that you don't think about it and thus you don't need to care, it's only when there are problems that it becomes noticeable.

Okay, I just went and checked the box that allows everyone to choose their own theme, but when I hit save and it refreshed, the box was unchecked still--tried again in case my fingers had slipped and got the same result. So don't know what's going on there.

It is about creating a site that ALL users can access AND that Google thinks they can access.

Oh, we can access, in the sense we can arrive to the page. And we manage to log-in (sort-of, Serenity couldn't and probably others also couldn't). But we can't funcion with it.

A responsive theme is meant to change according to the device the user uses--meaning it does the opposite of neglect, it considers everyone's viewing experience.

I know, except this one, and the new one before are not that at all. They don't adjust. They are dreadful, unreadable, colour headache on a computer.

And going by what several members that saw it on a phone, they weren't good for phones either (I don't have a smartphone, and even if I had, I would not come to the forum on my phone) so I can't say how it looks on a phone.

A test site is the thing to do. Sir Osis (or whomever is working) should have a phone to check. In fact, should have Android and Iphone and try all browsers in each. The test site link could be given if members feedback is wanted. That way, the board wouldn't keep being disrupted.

Tablets will also need to be tested.

Colours are easy to change on the code (source). Having a colour pantone with the each colour code helps. Fonts and its size are also easy to change.

Now, logged-in I have the old grey-green design, but logged-off I had the dreadful blue theme and layout (the layout/design itself of the blue theme is also terrible) mixed with a couple of grey-green bars. Will log-off and see how it looks.

As a funny aside, you should know never, ever, to start anything new, let alone tech related, on a Mercury Retrograde.  :P ;D

I logged-off. That way I still see a mix of the new theme and the old theme, some colours/part of colours are old theme, font, missing icons, no name under thread owner, etc are new there.

It is annoying and confusing. Any way of having the old theme when logged-off?
