Title: 48 Hours Mystery - A Family Affair
Post by: BraveNewWorld on July 15, 2012, 09:47:33 AM
Hi,

I watched this show last night - don't normally watch this kind of thing, but had a busy day and was just surfing the channels a bit, unwinding.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7414890n

Synopsis - a woman [ wife of several years to a successful business man, mother of three children ] has an affair with her brother in law [ a divorced, jobless man, living on welfare ]. It ends tragically, with her husband and her father in law being shot dead, and her mother in law being wounded and disfigured.

A couple of things stood out for me. Around about the 10th minute a sheriff who knew the couple mentioned how surprised he was that this couple had problems. And then around the 12th minute or so, the woman talks about how she was infatuated with her brother in law, and how she had to tell her husband because he could see that she wasn't the same anymore. Later she talks about how divorce wasn't an option for her husband, which is why the affair continued as it did. She mentions how she didn't think at all about her children. It just struck me as fitting the pattern of a midlife crisis like many stories that we've seen on this forum.

I get the feeling that there are maybe secrets not spoken of in the documentary about this particular family. Actually it even surprised me that the family had cooperated to develop a TV show about such a sad and personal story. It makes me ask the question again - what kind of man would get involved with a married woman like this - especially his own brother's wife? What kind of wife would behave like this in a family? After his brother's death the man effectively assumes his dead brother's life!

I thought I'd link it here in case anyone else saw it and had similar observations.

Thanks for posting, BNW.  I have watched many of these types of shows (48 Hours, Dateline etc) where a spouse is charged for murdering their husband or wife over the years but since MLC I see the stories in a completely different way.  One newer show, "Scorned: Love Kills", seems to nearly always involve what you'd swear is MLC, just listening to friends/family members describe how the situation unfolded.  You can't imagine the evil that comes about from a selfish attitude that's been launched in overdrive.

BNW and Wed, I love those shows.  LOL! They put me to sleep with the narrator's voice. I actually remember when I was little my Dad (a cop) told me it's always the spouse in these murders,  Yikes.
I remember in the papers here about 5 years ago this woman, an internist,  hired a hitman to kill her estranged H on a playground in front of their D4!!!  :o :o :o :o :o
She and her cousin, the hitman were found guilty and sentenced to life without parole. They're appealing it. Got Alan Dershowitz. I have heard a lot of crazy stories before but this one actually made me cry! :'(
