Just finished watching the opening ceremony.
The kids were up at 5:30am! So keen to watch it. They've been talking about it for sometime.
Well done London on a very creative, artistic display! The most beautiful set ever!!!!!
So this is the first Olympics of our forum. We have so many nationalities represented here and I think we also represent how differnet cultures can relate to each other in peace and harmony.
I'm a christian living in a 'christian' country but it's on this forum where I feel I can truely open up, speak opeingly about my faith and culture and evryone is respectful. If I did that in the community I would get more of a sneer or strange look. We are accepted no matter what our background and we get 2x4's with respect and because other's care. It really is a safe place.
Thank you to everyone! Now let the games begin!!!
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!!!
HUP HOLAND HUP!!!!
Go NEW ZEALAND!! (Kikki - you'll need to enlighten me on what I need to cheer for my neighbours).
-
SP Yay I am watching it now. Really cool and beautiful..I barely caught that scene in the very beginning with cottages etc so nice to look at.
I like the swimming....Go Michael Phelps....I love watching the faces of the parents in the audience. They are so happy and so proud. All the hard work paid off. ;D
I can't believe how organized these things are. Humans can be amazing when they have their wits about them ... Thanks this is a great idea.
-
O.k. now name your favorite Olympic memory! Mine is the U.S. ice hockey gold medal win!!!!

I LOVE the Olympics!!! Always cheer for the USA but I have the greatest respect for all the athletes and sometimes cheer the individual rather than the country. I actually have a friend ( from grad school) who's competing in the women's butterfly relay so in that event it's USA All the Way for me!!
-
My whole family watches the Olympics.
My favorite Olympic memory was when Sarah Hughes came from 4th place in the short program and took the Gold over the favorites by winning the free skate/long program. Michelle Kwan was part of that competition, too.
Another fav memory was the year the USA lady gymnasts took the Team Gold. I cannot remember what year that was. Mary Lou Retton's era?
-
Nice Show. It was very British. Loved the part of Bond & the Queen, the lightening of the cauldron and lots of the music.
Watched it with my siblings, mum, nephew, and paternal grandma. Now, go Portugal, go Britain.

This video has gone VIRAL

Go Swimming!

Favourite Moment? BEING at the sydney olympics, especially watching Cathy Freeman run in the 400 meteres. This was the week before my wedding!
I'll also be watching out for the 8 month pregnant Malaysian shooter!! You go girl!!!
-
D and I watched the opening ceremony and loved seeing all the athletes. While I do cheer for the US, I admit that I am also moved by the individual stories and athletes and celebrate all of their hard-earned successes. For me, the excitement of this year's games goes well beyond the boundaries of the United States. I am so thrilled that this is the first Olympics in which all of the more than 200 participating countries have sent women athletes to compete, and the United States has more women than men competing for the first time in history.
Even more wonderful is that, also for the first time EVER, Brunei, Qatar and Saudi Arabia allowed women to compete in the games. I applauded in my living room when I saw that Bahiya al Hamad, of Qatar, was the flag bearer for her country.
These battles for more equality and representation have been hard fought and are long overdue, but as a woman, the mother of a daughter, a women's rights activist, and a citizen of the world, I celebrate these victories with great joy and hope for the future! Equality for one, is more equality for all.

:D SP - Go New Zealand! is probably it ;D
Haven't seen the whole of the opening ceremony yet - but loved all that I saw of it.
I look forward to seeing all of those women athletes Phoenix - wonderful to hear. :)
-
Well as the first Brit to post since the opening ceremony I have to say I thought it was spot on. Someone has already said it was very British and it was.
We took the ceremony and made it different but ours. Brilliant organisation. And the lighting of the flame was inspired! Never saw that coming lol. Danny Boyle the Director wanted a charming opening and I think he managed it.
The most memorable moment for me from previus Olympics was when Steve Regrave got his last gold medal at his last Olympics.
Bring on the next memorable moments and good luck to all the countries taking part ;D.
xx
-
Yes I loved it. loved Mr bean...loved the Queen and Bond, the music & TV through the decades. Loved that the youngesters of the future lit the flame too, nice touch.
Many here will know (many will not, ha ) i have worked with young people for over 20yrs who, for whatever reason, have found themselves homeless. I am proud to say that a young man we helped a number of years ago is representing GB in the Taikwondo . I wont name him but I have to say it makes me very proud of the profession I have chosen. :)
-
Wow Hypergald,
That's a great story. My work is trying to assist the Big Issue in selling subscriptiosn and years ago, H was passionate about his role as team leader for 'soup kitchen' one night a month. he did a great job and it was one of the first things he gave up when his mood changed and he entered the crisis.
I'll be keeping my eye out for Taikwondo.
You and JA can be very proud of your country. :) :)
-
Hey the women's soccer [football in rest of world] is really watchable!!! [After Premier League & Champions League it takes patience to follow slower games]. South Africa & Canada--looking good.
-
To all the Brits here - you guys should be VERY proud!! Excellent show and a very poignant pause for WWI that brought me to tears. I also loved the segment with the Queen and my little ones think she really did parachute in. I LOVE IT!! But, the best part without a doubt had to be......Mr. Bean!! I guess Benny Hill was either retired or didn't fit, huh? Maybe him and Ozzy Osbourne will show up at the closing ceremonies....
Phoenix - As a father of daughters I could not agree with you more. I saw that for the first time ever the number of female athletes representing the US was higher than the number of male athletes and I think that's great as well. I really get into the women's sports during the Olympics too and they really do a great job of celebrating them along with the men. I do have to admit that I'm partial to women's beach volleyball though....
OP - I LOVED IT!! I had not seen that video but I laughed all the way through it! Btw, are any of your proteges representing us over there?
EDIT: Forgot to reply to Hyperglad - I didn't know that you had worked with youth but that is so honorable and best of luck to the young athlete! I've worked with sexual abuse victims for 13 years or so and there is a female judoka who came forward with her story of being sexually abused by her former coach for several years. He has been convicted and is in prison for the crimes against her, but she has overcome this and will be representing the US under a wonderful coach who helped her through the traumas and taught her that she was worthwhile and not at fault for what the POS did. Hopefully the judo matches will be televised as I will be cheering loudly for her!!
-
Hey everyone...I will be saying `Go Canada`but didn`t get to watch much of the opening ceremony. Other things going on
that i was dealing with but I so love the Olympics.
Going to stay tuned on this one...

Well, what can I say?
I just put up my Brazilian flag in my living room...
But I am British too - so, so proud of these London Olympics!!! My home town, my birthplace!!!

What I really love is the medal ceremony when an American gets a gold and they play the National Anthem. Brings me to tears every time.

Yes one girl I know just won a medal and set a new American Record in the 4x100M race.
Her name is L Neal from NYC.
I actually have a friend ( from grad school) who's competing in the women's butterfly relay so in that event it's USA All the Way for me!!
I assume that this is Claire Donahue since she went to WKU, she is also in the finals of the 100 butterfly tomorrow.
GO USA!

I'm a former volleyball player. I love watching this! My coach in college told me "If you would stop studying so much you could be in the Olympics" :o :o :o :o :o :o I didn't listen. ;D
-
Yes, OP, that is correct! Congrats to your mentee and the rest of the team!!!
Mamma - It's never too late. We can all start training for the Senior Olympics.

SP and Thundarr, Ok OK I must confess. When I woke up this morning and heard about the parachuting in Queen, I initially thought she might have done this :o :o :o :o Yeah I'm blonde....dirty blonde. LOL!! After a cup of coffee I realized how ridiculous that would have been let alone almost impossible. :P
It raced through my mind quickly how the first President Bush went sky diving on his 80th B-day! HaHaHaHaHa. Ya I'm a bit crazy ya think? LOL! :o :o :o :o
I even told H before bc I know he has no tv. I told him I believed it for a second and he gave me that old time cute ' Mama Bear you're so funny face' ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So proud, some of the olympic stories are so inspiring. These people strive so hard to achieve their dreams, it restores your faith in human nature.
Six golds today - not bad for an island. Go GB - the greatest nation on earth !!!!!!!!
-
Kudos to Claire Donahue for winning gold in the women's freestyle relay!! She didn't swim in the finals, but her performance in the semis qualified her for the gold as she got her team into the finals.
Yeah!
-
Not a dry eye in our house at the track events where GB won gold this evening. All three gold medalists were inspiring.
-
I saw them too... Even from afar, I cheered them on!
Well done GB!!!!
-
Great job GB!! Did anyone see the paraplegic athlete who ran the track race today and made it past the semis?
-
Fantastic night for team GB last night...and now we have just won the sailing wow we are doing good for such a small island :)
-
Now Andy Murray has gold in the tennis and Ben Ainslie in the sailing ;D
-
Yes JA and maybe another for Andy in the doubles :)
-
Yay GB - gold in equestrian jumping. Of course I like the equestrian but, this Olympics was really special: the pale covered surface in the arena showed the horses to best advantage for television. Greenwich Park was a beautiful setting.
Aaaaand: what did I say about Canada's womens' soccer team :) :) :). The Americans bought the ref. ;)
-
GB - equestrian:
silver in eventing
gold in jumping
gold in dressage
:) :) :)
-
YAY AUSSIES!! 3rd Gold in Sailing!!

Britain has put together one of the best Olympics yet! WELL DONE!
