Discussion Bo, Hope and Billie: The MLC as a Soap Opera Love Triangle
« on: March 08, 2017, 04:07:59 AM »
Any of you who grew up in the 80s or 90s and were fans of Days of Our Lives will get the reference in the title. I've seen long time posters here say don't expect reconnection to be in an instant like a Romantic Comedy film. And I agree. It's not so quick and neat. But I'm starting to think after reading others stories and seeing my husband start to turn back to me that it is more like a soap opera love triangle.

You know the ones. There's a big love story between two people, then something happens, usually one of the couple dies so the love never really dies between them, but then a few years later they are revealed to actually still be alive and come back with amnesia, which clears up after a few months. By the time of their return, the other partner has found a replacement partner, but the replacement is never as good as the original and has some serious flaws. The original couple both want to get back together but this new partner is in the way. The story line is dragged out for months or years. It's clear both parties want to get back together, but they can't. They have sequences that they make you feel are real reconnections and then it cuts to one or the other daydreaming and you know it is just them hoping for a return to how it was. Eventually they get back together but not after a lot of drama involving the new partner who is in the middle.

I'm starting to think these soap opera writers have all lived through a midlife crisis. Would you agree with the comparison?  ;D

Cheers did a story line where Frazier's wife Lilith had a mlc. She had an affair asked for space and separation and moved into an underground Ecco pod with her affair partner Dr Pascall. There was some great dialogue between her and Frazier, both characters were "shrinks". Frazier listed her mlc behavior and called her a cliche. The irony is that W and I watched those episodes during Christmas and she laughed. W would say maybe she was having a mlc sometimes but it wouldn't stop her from following mlc emotions, so it didn't matter. The friend she was talking to said her husband had one and she believed that you needed to get over the hump right away or you couldn't. I completely disagree based on research, but she was an enabler not a real friend.
