Discussion Cost of a divorce lawyer?
OP: January 27, 2017, 11:08:16 AM
OK my MLC said he is contacting a lawyer for advice.  I thought ok well I guess I should get in touch with one myself, just to be on the safe side.  I called a lawyer highly recommended by a friend and she is $400 an hour!  $400 for the consultation!!!!  I just about died!  I am a teacher's aide....I make very little money.  Is this what I will find calling different lawyers?   Thought maybe someone here had gone for a consult.  I live in the Atlanta, Georgia area, USA.

My lawyer started at 375 an hour when H started this whole divorce journey.  2.5 years later (or longer), she is now 425 an hour.  I too don't have the funds to pay for this.
It just adds to the stress of it all.

My X's was $200 in hour.

I found a free consultation and I bounced around to quite a few before I settled. The 400 an hour and 5000 retainer are pretty accurate and probably the standard rate.

I know this doesn't work for everybody but I said if he wanted a divorce so badly than he could pay for it.

He paid for both lawyers.

$250 per hour and $4000 retainer for a good attorney in our region. I was fortunate, as my accountant recommended my attorney.
I went to another who was less, but he wanted to jump right in and file. I was simply looking for some guidance at the time - rights, understanding the laws in regards to kids, etc.

H wanted to go through a mediator first. They are there to help negotiate, but cannot give legal advice. The mediator kept hinting we could have an attorney look at this. I was a bit dazed at first, but then realized she was shooting me a warning sign. So glad I heard her the second time.
