As one who is "under the arrow," I think I´m almost ready- gutter clean out tomorrow AM. Went to the grocery tonite at about 1 AM cause I figured it would not be a zoo- glad I did it. I figure no power for a few days.

I was just about to create a thread and there it was, already there:)

FTT...You are one of the posters I was initially thinking about.  Started to make a list of all the wonderful people I have met through this site; then thought I may leave someone out, and hurt their feelings so I generalized my post to everyone in the path.

Ás the church lady would say....."Don't you feel special?"

There.are towns not too far from me that are still trying to rebuild from the devastation of Irene last September. They are in my thoughts and prayers also.  Hopefully Sandy will just turn tail and head out to sea.

R2t I saw I the news last night about the earthquakes and immediately thought of some of our friends on here who live in the northwest and BC.

I did all the prep I can yesterday. Put all the outside furniture away etc.  Expecting high winds and power outages.  Most of the leaves are off the trees around me but the ground is so wet I worry about trees coming down.

I am sending prayers up that everyone on the eastern seaboard is sheltered from harm.

Thought that was funny too Thundarr.  It's going to be pretty bad. We live only a couple hundred feet from the bay.  They expect a 8ft storm surge and are going to have a mandatory evaluation for most towns around here.  They are telling us we will probably have no power for about a week...so no internet unless I able to get to work after a day or two...bummer.  Not fun, we are exhausted prepping the outside and have to move our vehicles early tomorrow.  We have candles, generator, flashlights so we are as ready as we can.  Most on our street are staying as are street was build up 5ft higher than the streets around us.  Last year we were an island with three feet of water at hightide in the surrounding streets, many homes in town were destroyed from salt water damage.  Should be interesting.

I live on the east coast, actually just a few blocks from the water and am right in the middle of where the storm is supposed to hit.

I lived through Isabelle (my H and I actually owned a waterfront home then and we had quite an adventure!)

Last year when Irene came I left town and drove west to ride it out at a motel.  Smart move but I came home too quickly.  I'd mistakenly been told my street had gotten power back but had to wait three days before it was restored.

The worst thing about the storm for me is the fact that, like last year with Irene, my H has not contacted me to see if I'm OK and, of course, he offers no help even though he's just 45 minutes from me.   It's still hard for me to believe, almost two years into the MLC madness, that he is so remote during a disaster like this.

He and OW live on a boat so I guess they'll have their hands full. ;D

I have friends with generators and I'm not in the least bit concerned.  When I lose power (I don't think it's an "if") I may just drive to my sister's.  She's nine hours west of me and I could stay with her as long as I need until power is restored.

The wind's kicking up already.  Going to be a long one!

TrustingMyHP,

Last year my H offered to help before Irene only to rescind and say he was too tired. Actually asked me if I could bring him batteries and flashlights (btw for him and poor little helpless OW).

I didn't bother to even ask this time and haven't heard a peep from him.  Either he doesn't care or knows I can handle myself just fine.  My H has left all responsibility for house and home behind him.

Too bad all the batteries are dead from toys! >:(
Better get a move on and finish up storm "preparedness"! ;) ;)
These 100 year storms are coming every 13 mos... :o :o :o :o :o  My brother who just left said "Maybe Al Gore is right"   ::)    LOL!!
Last year's storm is a trigger. H told me "Why should I have checked on you guys? You know my phone number."   :o :o :o :o :o
Yeah and about 30 miles west a whole CVS pharmacy fell into the stream and was swept away. :o :o :o :o :o :o

We had a tsunami advisory for a while last night.  I was texting my d b/c she was at a friend's house close to the beach.  Of course she thought I was completely silly...but when the advisory was extended she started to take it seriously. She'd heard b/4 I did from Facadebook.  So much for the internet, I could find NO information even on the government emergency site.  The warnings were there but you had to go to the menu then the sub-heading.  You'd think any alert would be posted front & centre on the main page!  The national tv/radio covered it for hours but all other media--useless, not even a running text.  Oh yeah, & my emergency wind-up radio--couldn't find it!

One point:  we were advised to limit use of phones--landline & cell, in the affected areas & the cell phones were not working well in those areas.  You think communication is so good & then something pretty minor like a non-damaging earthquake happens & you can't contact your family [not us just up north near Alaska].

I think in the end the largest wave was under a metre--in Hawaii!

All you east-coasters don't take chances!  Err on the side of caution.

And go find your radio & batteries!  ;D

The funny thing is most of us can live out of our pantries for awhile if need be.

Glad you are okay CJ I thought of you and last night.   Mama just yell if you need help I am all set here I hope.  We can take care of anything LBS style!

Everyone stay safe.... FTT, I was wondering about you.... Mamma.... well, you are in better shape than Sab Sam in that ratty apartment... when the lights go out for him, who knows what lurks, right?

My husband was home on Friday, which was "technically" ow's weekend..... Saturday morning we had a "talk" cuz I wasn't feeling so good about things.... he confessed he "wanted to run up to Connecticut RIGHT NOW" and then, upon FURTHER confession... told me that he told her he would be delayed "by traffic" on Friday night, when he was here to take me and the kids to the haunted hayride/house at a local farm stand.... but would be there on Saturday.... needless to say, she was PISSED, and texting him with threats to "Just don't bother.... IF you do come home, it will be to an empty house!!!" and he said he HAD to go up there to SEE if it was true... because if it WAS, then he would pack his $h!te and come home... He said he "needs to see if she really is the piece of $h!te I think she is... she's such a liar!!!" but, as he was PACKING IN FRONT OF ME, he kept saying "But, I'm not sure I will go... I might not go... and if I do, I might turn around and come back....." AS HE IS PACKING!!! I said "Well, you'd better get your suitcase ready..." and he would scrunch up his face like I was reading too much into the fact he was PACKING in front of me!!

Last night, about an hour after he got there, he texts me "Don't reply please, but I've made a huge mistake leaving your side.... I sent you an email..." I guess he doesn't want ow to know if he's texting me, LOL!!! The email read "I already know and realize that I made a mistake by coming, jeaopardizing everything I love.... pls let me know if you need moremoney or anything... call or text... i'M SO SO SO SORRY FOR LEAVING now I'm trapped by the storm... I don't know what I'm doing  :(" I replied "You are not trapped." So, today, as I'm out buying bottled water, etc. I get another email from him.... "I shouldn't be here!!!!! What am I doing???? I don't know.... call me if you need anything... I'm sorry for my choices that are bad....."

Now, WTH could he possibly do for us three states away??? I'm not replying.... I know he will text the kids to get to me... but I think I will enjoy NC, LOL!!!!

Stay safe everyone....

No Sandy here but during the night the wind was blowing hard, the windows were shaking and the temperature dropped.

Trusting,

My thoughts exactly. No contact from my ex-H, none at all. Could be a nuclear war and he would not care. Hard for me to fathom the level of anger or denial that must be going on in his head and heart. Also, I think that there must be so much pressure from OW to "get out completely" that he dare not even consider contacting me.

Of course, I am in the direct path, like so many other HS members, but so if my ex-H and OW. Hope she flies off on her broom.

Very eerie here in NYC now. Windy, misting/sprinkling. No real rain yet. People out walking around. Most stores and offices closed.

Just waiting for it all to unfold; like waiting for MLC to resolve!

Hugs to all,

Bird

Feel the same. I'm in MD/DC area. It is raining hard here and winds are picking up considerably. Worst supposed to be around 8:00 pm tonight into tomorrow. Nothing from H. I have both my sons living with me s20, s17, d21 away at school in PA. No word or concern from H. I'm 19 mos BD, Going on11 mos almost since he walked out.  It's real trip, how they can just walk away, no care or concern.  It's like we never existed, he is dead or something.  That is the way I have begun to look at it. I don't consider myself married right now. To what???  I think crises, natural disasters make us feel more vulnerable, but also help us see what is really important and the reality of it all.

I hope everyone fairs well with the storm.

Ntmalu..... are you close to Meriden? Because if you are.... I demand you get in your car and head over to the NEW Holiday Inn and look for my husband's OW..... I'm sure she is having to work because she is the supervisor ow in charge and there's a STORM coming!!! You'll know it's her by the giant hoop earrings.... I call her JHo, if that gives you a hint, LOL!!!

CrazyJourney... you liked what i wrote/journaled??? There's more where THAT came from!!! He emailed this afternoon saying
Quote
"I'm really sorry I'm not there!!!!  You don't even know what I'm going thru .....my mom called and said she wants to come out December 20 thru the 31st and I said that would be great and it would be alright with you but if its not ....then let me know".
When I ignored... he texted about an hour later "Are you okay?".

He "got trapped" at JHo's last year during our only blizzard... after texting me about how the traffic was just too bad, so he was going to be home in the morning..... then, the next day, telling me he was sorry but he was "trapped".... I've heard him refer to how he feels at JHo's as "TRAPPED" many, many times. I've asked him why he doesn't just check out while she's in the shower sometime if he feels so TRAPPED and he replied "I've thought about it, but that would be the cowardly thing to do...."  :o

The governor of Connecticut officially closed all of the highways at 1pm today. Let's see..... he left her and drove three hours to JHo's, arriving at her place around 5pm Saturday night.... We didn't even get rain until this morning....he had plenty of time to get home if he wanted to be HERE more than he wanted to placate her.... he's right.... he IS trapped because she carries his b@lls in her purse...

So glad when we moved he refused to get a landline.... because he doesn't trust that ow wouldn't harass us or find out we moved.. but it ALSO means he can't annoy me with calling the HOME phone!!! I'm hoping he gets a BIG DOSE of consequences while he is now TRULY trapped at her apartment with HER out working and him left alone at home WITH HER KID that he can't stand, and whatever family members she currently has moved in.... that's one of the reasons he doesn't like her... she let's her "welfare trash family) move in with her, even in THEIR old apartment that they lived in together!!! I guess "freedom" really ISN'T free, now is it???? ;)

I expect him to continue to try and contact me in desperation...maybe he'll get ANGRY with me for "playing these games!!!'... The confusion that can ONLY be explained by MLC is so obvious to me.... yet people in "real life" that know about my sitch tell my "it's only alcoholism!!" Uh, no..... there is alcoholism, and on TOP of that is this NEW CRAZY $h!te!!! Anyone else heard that "it's only alcoholism!!"???

FTT.... batten down the hatches.... wind is getting really bad down here.....

Wind is bad here. Not much rain yet!  If Sandy takes it's project left hook into NJ upstate NY will miss the bulk of the rain. Authorities called my work because they are expecting 9ft storm surge in the river at the next high tide..2am tomorrow.  They have a facilities right on the Hudson and called to tell them to take emergency actions.   God bless all of you closer to the center in NJ and NYC.

Power still on but many have lost it.

My "hero" called me at 1:30 today to see if I was prepared and offer help.  Really!!!  Nothing like waiting until the last minute so there really is nothing left to do. Ugh!  Said he was worried!  Ugh!

Just a dumb question but, what do you do in an urban area when there is no electricity?  I don't have water [on well pump] or heat without electricity but all of us have wood stoves of some kind & reasonably cheap wood [oh yeah, generators too].  I also have an outdoor kitchen [very rough but functional].  What do you do for heat or do furnaces work without electricity?  I know in the old days an oil furnace needed a little power to start...  ???
Title: Re: To All Posters Regarding Hurricane Sandy
Post by: Alwaysthere on October 30, 2012, 05:11:45 PM
CJ,

All gas and oil fired systems need some electric for ignition and circulation.  So without electric no heat and no hot water.    I have a gas stove so if it is cold I boil water or turn on the oven (have to light it the old fashion way).  This is not recommended though.  It is 55 degrees here right now so not too cold.

P.s. I have power. The storm skirted south and west of us.  Some people without power due to downed trees.   NJ and NYC got the brunt of it. Plus all that snow in some areas.

Basking in the fluorescent glow of Mickey Ds. No power, no landline, no internet, no cell phone- battery died, so I come to suck off the outlet at the American icon. I get to see the riff raff who come here REGULARLY.

About 40 trees down and one electric line that will be on my bill:(

The dogs and I are fine. The wood stove is going. I´m rationing my flushes:) Made coffee on the grill this AM, that is really my only "need".  Other folks have it much worse.

No idea when life will return to normal- lots of trees across roads and I am low priority for electric. But- I´ve unplugged lots of things to avoid surge disaster. Saw a transformer blow up last night- quite impressive.

Stay safe, stay warm,
FTT

Once we had no power for 3 weeks [they were replacing the poles on our property--the storm of 2008].  But that was July & we cooked outside & went swimming instead of showers.  It was kind of fun.  For a week. I cannot imagine in the dark & cold.

You think we're all civilized & high tech. then the power goes out.   :o :o :o

We know FTT is desperate to be at "The Big M Lounge."

She's a cook from scratch kind of lady, and I doubt anything other than the coffee is good for her MS.

Thanks for letting us know you are safe.

Calamity,
We had no electricity for a few days so out came the camp gear and the candles.  Atleast we had a gas oven.
Many years ago, there was no gas so I had my showers at mums or the gym where they were on electricity.  The cafe's around town just offered a few items on their menus.

Hope everyone on the forum is ok.

Good to hear you're fine FTT.  You at Mickey D's?  That is an interesting mental picture to have in my head!  ::)
Yea well at least they have free internet and are a free wifi connection when you need one.

Glad to see all the posts and to know that y'all are fine! Still looking for news on Wondering, though...
FTT, good to know the dogs got through it too, were they scared?
Here in Brazil, we are relatively free from these 'natural' disasters, we have flooding sometimes after heavy rain but that is about as bad as it gets.
I hope electricity is restored soon!

Can´t eat the bagel or the cheese:(
Just met another neighbor, so the storm is not all bad.
But... ins. does not cover my massive tree damage. Sigh, there goes a vacation or two or three. And I was planning to whoop it up over xmas break. Oh well, still have a house and the precious pupsters.

I took my daughter out yesterday searching for firelogs..... you know, we just moved into a new house and I forgot about the fireplace, LOL!!! I don't want to burn wood in it because it's a small, builder's grade one and my past experience tells me "put one of those candle gardens in there" but the neighbor reminded me we could use it for more than decorative purposes, LOL!! Lo and behold, there were areas with power, and I found plenty of logs, lighters and potato chips no problem!!!

Made a mental note as to the gas stations with power and fuel... swung by my thrift store to find that it was open.... well, when things get tough, the tough go shopping in America!!! Managed to piddle around WalMart hoping their tv display would have the news on, but no luck with that.... thankfully, I have satellite radio in my truck so as long as we were in it, I could listen to cnn and I dug around and found a car charger for my cell phone that works intermittently... basically, you wave the plugged in phone around until the blue light on the charger comes on, and if your arm is way up in the air, or practically under the seat, then that's how you drive!

We went home late in the afternoon and I suggested to my son that we all go out for Mexican food... telling  my kids it was possible we could get power later on... might as well have a hot meal! Got to the restaurant and slid right in to a booth in the bar area... no waiting!! Bar is better because we were in tv withdrawals... all sports though, no news!!! Anyway.... when we left at 7pm, the place was PACKED and the wait looked to be about an hour or more for a table... same with the other restaurant across the street.. decided to stop at WalMart and get book lights for something to do in the dark and then went home to read under comfy covers..... after passing neighborhood after neighborhood with no power, we started to count the houses that had lights on..... "There's one!!!" and rounded the corner to our little enclave to.... LIGHTS!!! My kids cheered! YAY!! CNN!!!

Heat was on, new fridge kept everything cold for over 24 hours..... we are really, really blessed, and as we heard the reports on CNN while driving around all day, I kept saying to my kids "We are SOOOOO lucky, fortunate and blessed....." I'm not sure they really "get it" because we just really didn't suffer any hardship at all... My Mom is in lower Manhattan.... no power expected for several days, but she has an illegal gas bathroom heater and stove, so the neighbors were over at her place cooking yesterday.... her husband lives in Philly and didn't lose power at all, and I imagine he will go get her as soon as the bridges are open...

I put my AWOL husband on NC status as soon as he bolted for ow's on Saturday in response to her threats and emotional blackmail.... he's been desperately trying to contact for days... yesterday he offered to get us hotel rooms if we wanted.... I finally answered and just told him we were fine... he allegedly broke up with ow AGAIN..... at least in his mind, LOL!!

FTT, you're welcome to come stay with me, but my yard isn't fenced yet, so I can't accomodate the dogs!!! I guess you will be just fine with your wood stove... I've seen how resilient you are, and there's always Mickey D's for tv and internet, right?

The bank I work for NEVER CLOSES!!! EVER, EVER, EVER!!! We're like the post office..... but no power means no bank and they are going on three days now being closed!!! I was already scheduled to be off today and yesterday... kids out of school, so it's turned into a mini vacay.... we're just wondering about Halloween and trick or treating.... going out later to get more candy...." just in case".

So happy to have my internet back, but it is very slow and unreliable at this point..... so many people without power and flooded homes to deal with if they can even get out.... I am truly counting my blessings, and I'm grateful that while I was driving around with my cell phone up in the air to get power, MammaBear kept me company!!!

LettingGo,

My post has absolutely nothing to do with the weather/storm but after reading about your fireplace I just had to respond.  I have a prefab fireplace which has NEVER been used before.  I have kept a "hearth candelabra" in it and only lit the candles a few times.  I've just placed an order for one of those electric fake log burning fireplace inserts!  I'm just so excited about it.......can't believe something like this makes me giddy!  It is also remote controlled!  It plugs right up into a regular outlet.  I have one on each side of the fireplace so that makes it handy.  I read all the "specs" on it and can use it with or without heat..........the "fire" display can be used without heating.  I understand from the specs that it also "crackles".  I'm just busting at the seams about it.........can't wait to see how the kitty cats react to it.  So, yep, you can do more with the fireplace.  Just thought I'd share.

I also want to say I'm so glad you and your family survived the storm.  My thoughts and prayers are with all the others as well.

    ((((HUGS))))

Thanks for the offer LG - my neighbor up the road (and miles and miles via tree detours) has offered showering privileges and tomorrow, I´m taking her up on it. Moved to the more chi chi (sp?) cafe at the grocery store- quieter and complimentary coffee today. I did hours of branch cleanup today. Cooked on the grill and have the wood stove going. Tomorrow... I´m going to use one of my flushes (got 4 toilets so I am rationing the flushes). Yeah, excitement takes on a new meaning in the post-Sandy era.

Here´s my hurricane ditty: http://soundcloud.com/raquelita-rhinestone/hurricane-blues-ii

Be safe- trees can still topple.

FTT..... there's nothing better than a hot shower!!! NOTHING!!! While your property is so beautiful and exceptional, I don't envy you your tree cleanup... my MLCer had already taken a chainsaw to the forest in our backyard, so the brushpile was already there, and not much more came down!! However, we've moved into one of those neighborhoods where everyone gets the rakes out the minute a leaf falls, so our yard is not exactly up to snuff, LOL!! I'm just not that ambitious!! I like to wait until they ALL fall, and THEN clean them up!!

Mr. LG came home yesterday WEARING HIS WEDDING RING!!!!! What sorcery is this!???? I went out to run some errands, and when I got home (with a twin mattress from the old house in the back of my truck) he was out talking to the neighbors about Halloween activities..... he asked our son what the mattress was for and he said "It's for YOU" right in front of everyone, but I don't think they were paying attention.... anyway... we had a nice evening.... watched "The Dictator" (which I give 3 thumbs down) and then I went upstairs to my wonderful, comfortable King sized bed and left him in his comfy mancave bed.... new rules. I like seeing the ring, though..... as long as we're moving forward, it's a good thing.

Off to work after being home for three days....one kid has school, and the other one doesn't.... husband home to take care of her, so all is good.

To all members in NJ an NYC area,

I was on the thruway upstate today.  Saw many guardsmen heading south. Plus lots of tree removal vehicles.  It is good to see help going to where it is so sorely needed.

Hugs
