Oh man. As an LBS and a sort-of musician, I've spent more time with music these past few months than any one person save for my S.

Behold my playlist. Not all songs are of the self-pity variety, however, and there's naturally a leaning toward punk because I still have to be me.

Dearly Beloved (acoustic) - Bad Religion
Find Your Way - Authority Zero
Angel's Wings - Social Distortion
Jordan's First Choice - Against Me!
Velvet Alley - Strung Out
My Sanity - Bad Religion
Gone - Bouncing Souls
Look Who You Are - Pennywise
Fall Back Down - Rancid
Don't Take Me for Granted - Social Distortion

I could go on and on and on, but you get the idea.

Dido White flag

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-fWDrZSiZs

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you
Or tell you that
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
Where's the sense in that?
I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I know I left too much mess and
Destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of it's over
Then I'm sure that that makes sense
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

We see one another sometimes...it is nice...sweet....I find it draining..heard this song today.....

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize
Don't patronize me
'Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't
I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holding me
Morning will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
'Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't

For me it would be something like this at the moment:

When you Believe - BUY Noteworthy version
All of me - John Legend & Linsey Stirling
One - Sleeping at Last
Two - Sleeping at Last
Jolene  - any artist goes
The Greatest Show on Earth - Nightwish
Alpenglow - Nightwish
Come cover me - Nightwish

But I listen all types across the board. For example not so long ago I discovered a grassroots group The Petersons - they are awesome.....  And I could not help noticing Bad Religion by NorthMan84. Love them too.... I am a very mixed bag musically.... These days it's definitely less sad than it was at one point. Hell, I can even enjoy/sing along with Miley's "Nothing Breaks like's a Heart" with smile on my face (that song was tooping the charts at the time of BD, and it was my cry your heart out anthem, LOL).

Thanks for moving this thread back up - I hadn't seen it.  My playlists have been an unbelievable solace and mood-lifter. Sometimes it's easier to absorb the wisdom from music than any other source.  I'm going to check out what others have shared, and here are some of my favs - for sadness, anger, acceptance....

I'm the Only One, Melissa Etheridge
Let Her Cry, Hootie and the Blowfish
Release, Grace Potter (please listen to this one!)
Rain, Nick Fabian
Lay Low, Gretchen Peters
Sideways, Travis Meadows (for REAL!!!)
The Point of Arrival, Carrie Newcomber (hard to listen to the first time)
Monsters, Eric Church (wish I could have xH listen to this one)
Find Yourself, Lukas Nelson
Crack the Case, Dawes
And the Birds Sing, Tyrone Wells
This is Me, Keala Settle, The Greatest Showman soundtrack
Many the Miles, Sara Bareilles
No More Pain, Joan Armatrading
Spare an Angel, Chris Rice
Let Him Fly, Patty Griffin
100 Years, Five for Fighting

and from the VERY first days -
No Reason to Fear, JJ Hairston
Anthem, Leonard Cohen
Bright Side of the Road, Van Morrison
And the Healing Has Begun, Van Morrison

Edited to add one more important one from the early days: Comeback Kid, Brett Dennen
(I was crying on the bathroom floor, but here's the comeback!)

This morning, for me it is a song by John Michael Talbot  "God Alone is Enough" and based upon St. Theresa of Avila poem.

What resonated with me were the words " Patient endurance, will obtain everything" :)

Let nothing trouble you
Let nothing frighten you
For everything passes
But God will never change

Patient endurance
Will obtain everything
Whoever has God
Wants for nothing at all

God alone is enough
God alone is enough
Whoever has God
Wants for nothing at all

God alone is enough
God alone is enough
Whoever has God
Wants for nothing at all

So let nothing trouble you
Let nothing frighten you
Everything passes
But God will never change

Patient endurance
Will obtain everything
Whoever has God
Wants for nothing at all

God alone is enough
God alone is enough
Whoever has God
Wants for nothing at all

God alone is enough
God alone is enough
Whoever has God
Wants for nothing at all

Let nothing trouble you
Let nothing frighten you
For everything passes
But God will never change

Patient endurance
Will obtain everything

Wants for nothing at all

Feeling the loss, while being optimistic, with a happy tune to groove to.

These have been on repeat for me for the last week, and I have to attribute them somewhat to my better mood - everytime I'm feeling a little sorry for myself the playlist comes on and I stomp all over town listening to these songs and arrive home feeling stronger:

Halsey: https://youtu.be/8nBFqZppIF0 - word for word everything is so true except I WAS stupid enough to have a baby with him.

Ella Eyre: https://youtu.be/pnDvD7Ko3IM - just like a phoenix

Lizzo: https://youtu.be/vuq-VAiW9kw - my new forever anthem

and I want to dedicate this to every LBS out there:

Selena Gomez: https://youtu.be/ia1iuXbEaYQ

P.s. I've just watched the Halsey video for the first time - grimace. Please don't let the gratuitous bikini wearing put you off - just listen to the song. Disclaimer: I haven't watched any of the videos themselves - it's only about the music.

Songs for your mood
#14: June 30, 2020, 05:55:56 AM
A new song from "The Chicks" (formerly The Dixie Chicks...album to be released July 17 called Gaslighter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbVPcPL30xc

One comment:
"If this causes one person to look up the definition of gaslighting and get away from a toxic person, it's worth it."

LOVE IT! Love them!
Lyrics
Gaslighter, denier
Doin' anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
We moved to California and we followed your dreams
I believed in the promises you made to me
Swore that night 'till death do us part
But you lie-lie-lie-lie-lied
Hollywood welcomed you with open doors
No matter what they gave you, you still wanted more
Acting all above it when our friends divorced
What a lie-lie-lie-lie-lie
You're such a
Gaslighter, denier
Doin' anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me
You're sorry, but where's my apology?
Gaslighter, you liar
You thought I wouldn't see it if you put it in my face
Give you all my money, you'll gladly walk away
You think it's justifiable, I think it's pretty cruel
And you know you lie best when you lie to you
'Cause, boy, you know exactly what you did on my boat
And, boy, that's exactly why you ain't comin' home
Save your tired stories for your new someone else
'Cause they're lie-lie-lie-lie-lies
Look out, you little
Gaslighter, denier
Doin' anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me
You're sorry, but where's my apology?
Gaslighter, you liar
You just had to start a fire, had to start a fire
Couldn't take yourself on a road a little higher
Had to burn it up, had to tear it down
Tried to say I'm crazy
Babe, we know I'm not crazy, that's you
Gaslighting
You're a lie-lie-lie-liar
Oh, honey, that's you
Gaslighting
You made your bed and then your bed caught fire
Gaslighter, I'm your mirror
Standin' right here until you can see how you broke me
Yeah, I'm broken
You're still sorry, and there's still no apology
Gaslighter, denier
Doin' anything to get your ass farther
Gaslighter, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me (gaslighter)
You're sorry, but where's my apology?
Gaslighter, you liar

I just heard this song in a movie and thought it would good one to add here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD1cxSE25ck

Jet - Look what you've done

Take my photo off the wall
If it just won't sing for you
'Cause all that's left has gone away
And there's nothing there for you to prove
Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

Give me back my point of view
'Cause I just can't think for you
I can hardly hear you say
What should I do, well you choose

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
A fool of everyone
A fool of everyone

Take my photo off the wall
If it just won't sing for you
'Cause all that's left has gone away
And there's nothing there for you to do

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
Oh well, it seems likes such fun
Until you lose what you had won

Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
A fool of everyone
A fool of everyone

I expect a lot of people can relate to this.

Truth be Told

Lie number one you're supposed to have it all together
And when they ask how you're doing
Just smile and tell them, "Never better"
Lie number 2 everybody's life is perfect except yours
So keep your messes and your wounds
And your secrets safe with you behind closed doors

Truth be told
The truth is rarely told, now
I say I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not
I'm broken
And when it's out of control I say it's under control but it's not
And you know it

I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
So let the truth be told

There's a sign on the door, says, "Come as you are" but I doubt it
'Cause if we lived like it was true, every Sunday morning pew would be crowded
But didn't you say the church should look more like a hospital
A safe place for the sick, the sinner and the scarred and the prodigals
Like me
Well truth be told
The truth is rarely told
Oh am I the only one who says
I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not
I'm broken
And when it's out of control I say it's under control but it's not
And you know it

I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
So let the truth be told

Can I really stand here unashamed
Knowin' that you love for me won't change?
Oh God if that's really true
Then let the truth be told
I say I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not
I'm broken
And when it's out of control I say it's under control but it's not
And you know it

I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
Yeah I know
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know

Songs for your mood
#17: March 08, 2021, 12:50:00 PM
This is the song that, for me, sums it all up. Sarah McLachlan’s Do What You Have To Do:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B3nTYZcTb5Y

What ravages of spirit
Conjured this temptuous rage
Created you a monster
Broken by the rules of love
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
Every moment marked
With apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
Tryin' to escape this desire
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
The yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
But I have the sense to recognize
That I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
A glowing ember
Burning hot and
Burning slow
Deep within I'm shaken by the violence
Of existing for only you
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
And I have the sense to recognize but I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
(I don't know how to let you go)

Good song, JB. I’d never heard it before.

Taking it wayyyy back to my chaotic eighth year on earth, this one popped up in a deja vu moment and has been on repeat for me all week:

A trio down memory lane....I have heard this song a thousand times but never paid attention to the lyrics and actually probably have not listened to it for decades....thinking about my Beloved with each verse....foolish man.

APOLOGY by Gordon Lightfoot

I remember everything
I've learned about survival
I've walked with fools and kings
And I've even read the Bible
There I came upon some lines
Givin' me direction
Gather not your gold on earth
Your kingdom is in heaven
But I chose to live instead
Inside the shell they gave me
'Til in spite of everything
Good fortune came to find me
I tried my best to run away
But I could not avoid the feelin'
Soon I was reelin' on my feet
I made a grab at anything
The earth was gone and I was on
A vicious circle then
After I'd gone and let myself surrender
I didn't want to die at all
I thought I'd live forever
Then she gave me everything
A king could never borrow
But I twisted all her gifts
Her wisdom was my sorrow
So I left her cryin'
And roamed across the river
The angels offered me their hands
But I could not forget her
So I came to where she was
By river, road and reason
I slept beneath her window
In the moonlight summer season
But I could not go inside
I heard the sound of laughter
And the rustle of her hair upon his skin
I made a grab at anything
The earth was gone and I was on
A vicious circle then
After I'd gone to cry down my sorrow
I didn't want to live no more
Nor face the bright tomorrow
Then I remembered everything
I've learned about survival
Havin' walked with fools and kings
I've even read the Bible
I remember all those lines
Givin' me direction
Gather not your gold on earth
It will not pass inspection
And still I think when I'm alone
Away from all night splendor
If gold could buy one night with her
I wish I had some to send her

xyzcf, I have three Gordon Lightfoot hits CDs, hopefully that track is on one of them...

Instead of just finding out about a song that's been out for ten years, this morning I came across a song that came out... This morning! Also timely with all of the recent discussions about finding our original selves.

Alex Lahey, Congratulations

Got your freedom now, boy, who do you serve
Took for granted what you should have preserved
No time left, no time left to make amends
Keep burning bridges while you're buying your new friends

A day of reflection hits
You're a shell, skin and bones, counting costs
Is it worth your soul?
A day of reflection hits

It's funny how times can change
Rearrange and distance makes the pain fade away
So important then, doesn't matter now, both feet on the ground
Come full circle, yeah, come full circle

No access granted now, boy, you've been denied
Jump a fence to see what's on the other side
Are you wanted, are you wanted?
The question is could second chances mean another impression

A day of reflection hits
You're a shell, skin and bones, counting costs
Is it worth your soul?
A day of reflection hits

It's funny how times can change
Rearrange and distance makes the pain fade away
So important then, doesn't matter now, both feet on the ground
Come full circle, we've come full circle

I got one foot stuck in heaven, yeah, one boot stuck in hell
I looked at God, he winked at me, I made this mess myself
Don't be surprised and don't deny, hear every word I say
Close the door and don't look back or you will fade away

It's funny how times can change
Rearrange and distance makes the pain fade away

It's funny how times can change
Rearrange and distance makes the pain fade away
So important then, doesn't matter now, both feet on the ground
Come full circle, full circle, come full circle, we have come full circle

Not really my style but some of the lyrics hit:

https://youtu.be/lwgr_IMeEgA

You're broken down and tired
Of living life on a merry go round
And you can't find the fighter
But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out
And move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you

When the silence isn't quiet
And it feels like it's getting hard to breathe
And I know you feel like dying
But I promise we'll take the world to its feet
And move mountains
Bring it to its feet
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you

All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
And we will rise
We will rise
We'll rise, oh, oh
We'll rise
I'll rise up
Rise like the day
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I will rise a thousand times again
And we'll rise up
High like the waves
We'll rise up
In spite of the ache
We'll rise up
And we'll do it a thousand times again

Upcoming wedding anniversary has me thinking of the inevitable day I will have to deal with legally severing the ties with my vanished former husband and all that comes with that, my having to lay bare my shameful circumstances to a man who will revel in my misfortune, knowing he’ll “get away with everything” and pay absolutely no price for his monstrous mistreatment of me. It’s a thought I generally try to push way into the back of my mind, a can I try to kick as far down the road as I can and hope I never catch up to it.

I had almost forgotten until just now all the shenanigans with him stealing the marriage certificate, where he stole it on one of his last visits to our at the time shared home, denied he had it for almost a year to my then lawyer, refused delivery of certified mail- and then he vanished.
Yeah, totally normal end to a marriage…

Anyway, today this song came up in my background playlist and that’s what brought up the memory and the unwanted reminder of unfinished business…

https://youtu.be/D_-hJrVvY1Q

Soap and water
Take the day from my hand
Scrub the salt from my stinging skin
Slip me loose of this wedding band…

… Soap and water
Wash the year from my life
Straighten all that we trampled and tore
Heal the cut we call husband and wife…

Elle King- song “Let go”

My favorite verse in the song

I had to pay for all of your bad behavior
But expensive lessons are always the best to know
I'm not waiting for the let go
Don't need any of your say so
I put the pieces back together
So thank you or whatever
Nothing lasts forever, man, I guess so
Waiting for the let go
Waiting for the let go

I don’t know if every location does this, but the common area of our local School of Rock has a sign reading,”NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.” :D

Sometimes things just all seem to fit together. I heard this song for the first time on Friday and then this morning I had to do something that involved driving past my old home, the one my former H conned me into selling as he was secretly getting his ducks in a row, the one that would be paid off now and be providing me the security I worked so hard to provide (notice I’m taking full credit for that because it was never a “we” endeavor, even though I was wholeheartedly building it for “us”.)
I drove by and it looked exactly the same yet unrecognizable at the same exact time. I can’t really explain it. I felt like I was looking at a house I used to have a recurring dream about.

Anyway, I immediately connected to this song in a “hey, whatever that synthy drum-piano-guitar sound is, it’s exactly how I feel right now” kinda way, and as I drove by the only safe place I ever knew, I weirdly for a brief second wished for a time-warpy miracle where I could send it back as a message to the teenage version of me.

I know what you're gonna be
I know that you're gonna be
You're crumbling up just to see
Afraid that you'll be just like me

I'd never heard that one, JB, but I really like the lyrics.

I haven't thought about this Poe song in forever, but it popped in my head and has been stuck there since a conversation I had with a very lonely, very talkative elderly man to whom I was delivering meals on wheels. I deliver to the same folks every week and chat with all of them and make sure everything looks okay. While I was at this man's home chatting with him, he asked me if I wouldn't mind helping him move some things from one room to another and one of the things I moved was a box of "my first wife's things." His first wife who, it turns out, he divorced about 40 years ago, which would have made him in somewhere in his 40s. Hasn't seen her since - sounds like he was basically a vanisher, and he mentioned his kids present tense as though they were still young school age children, as if they remain frozen in his mind at that age. He didn't say the word "affair." He did say, "I was selfish" and talked about his second wedding being just after his divorce and so he never lived alone until now. There were no family photos in his home that I could see, and he's now frail and alone.

He's kept a bit of her boxed up all these years, and I suspect it doesn't really mean much except that I've noticed sometimes people hoard memories and build stories around them that have all sorts of purposes that are known only to them. Whatever's in the box, it's for him and about him, not her. It's not touching and romantic like a movie would probably portray it. It's just an old man with a box.
I only deliver once a week, and not every week, but he's on my route and I'll see him again. Wonder if the whole story will unfold over time:

https://youtu.be/sXjO8stSQiE?si=39Tljuc-p2LP25fo

It makes sense that it should happen this way
That the sky should break, and the earth should shake
As if to say: Sure it all matters but in such an
unimportant way
As if to say:

Fly away, sweet bird of prey
Fly fly away
Nothing can stand in your way
Sweet bird, if you knew the words
I know you'd say: fly, fly away

It makes sense that it should hurt in this way
That my heart should break, and my hands should shake
As if to say: Sure it don't matter except in the most
important way
As if to say:

Fly away, sweet bird of prey
Fly fly away
I won't stand in your way
Sweet bird, if you knew the words
I know that you'd say: fly, fly away

It makes sense that it should feel just this way
That you slowly fade and yet still remain
As if to say: Everything matters in such an invisible way
As if to say: It's O.K.
Fly... away
